Xiaomi's Hugo Barra: India Growing Like China Five Years Ago (video)

Xiaomi's Hugo Barra on the Mobile Smartphone Market in India - November 10, 2015: Hugo Barra, Xiaomi vice president of global operations for Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi (mi.com), discusses the company's plans for India with Bloomberg's Emily Chang. (Source: Bloomberg)

Xiaomi shipped 18.3 million smartphones in 3Q15, bringing its 2015 total to 52.1 million. While the company continues its pursuit of branching off into Southeast Asia, India, and Brazil, China still remains the sweet spot for the company. Within China, Xiaomi launched the Redmi Note 2, Redmi 2A Prime, as well as the Mi 4c in the third quarter. The Redmi Note 2 was the most popular model among Chinese consumers and drove volumes through Xiaomi's retail location known as the Mi Home. (source: IDC)

Smartphone shipments reach second highest level for a single quarter as worldwide volumes reach 355.2 million in the 3rd Quarter, 2015, according to IDC
Contrary to what media coverage might suggest, the smartphone market is about much more than just Apple and Samsung. While these two companies are market leaders, their combined market share amounted to no more than 37.3 percent in the most recent quarter. Despite Apple (and to a lesser degree Samsung) stealing the headlines, the fact is that the smartphone market is not (and hasn’t been for some time) a two-horse race. According to IDC, other smartphone vendors, led by Chinese powerhouses Huawei (26.5 million), Lenovo (18.8 million including Motorola) and Xiaomi (18.3 million), shipped a combined total of more than 220 million smartphones in the past three months, as demand for low to mid-range handsets in emerging markets continued to surge. In Q3 2015, Samsung shipped 84.5 million smartphones and Apple shipped 48 million smartphones, retaining, for now, their lead of the global market.

Android has come a long way since Google bought it 10 years ago today | VentureBeat | Mobile | by Jordan Novet: "... People thought we were crazy when we acquired … Android,” Google noted in its most recent annual report. Tech media outlets were shortsighted in their guesses about the implications of the deal... Globally, Android had more than 1 billion monthly active users in June 2014, Google said. More than 1.05 billion Android smartphones were shipped around the world in 2014, giving the OS 81.5 percent market share, compared with 192.7 million units and 14.8 percent market share for iOS, according to IDC . Put simply, Android has come to be the smartphone standard around the world. Buying Android — for a reported $50 million — was Google’s “best deal ever,” Google executive David Lawee said in 2010. Now, that statement is easy to understand ..."

UPDATE August 2, 2015: from WIRED: "Google often gives its software away for free. It has long believed in open source software. But last week, the company took this idea to the next level. It gave away all rights to Kubernetes, a cloud computing system originally designed by Google engineers, asking a non-profit to manage its development. It didn’t just share some software code with the world. It agreed to let an independent party oversee the development of the code ... Cloud Native Computing Foundation, the organization is just the latest in a series of high profile new foundations now stewarding opens source projects created by large tech companies."

domains: xiaomi.com (resolves to mi.com for Chinese market); mi.com (global market -- including English language for US)

Management - mi.com: "Mr. Hugo Barra Vice President Hugo Barra is responsible for Xiaomi's Global division and is in charge of the company's products and operations in all markets outside of Mainland China. Before joining Xiaomi in 2013, Hugo Barra was Vice President of Android Product Management at Google. Prior to joining the Android team, he worked for Google in London as Director of Product Management for Mobile, a role he had since joining the company in 2008. Hugo is a graduate of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with bachelors and masters degrees in computer science, electrical engineering and management science."

Xiaomi looks to brand for international markets with Mi.com: "Ever since Xiaomi hired Hugo Barra away from Google's Android team, it was made clear that the company had designs on expanding its brand reach around the world. While the company has expanded a bit, it has taken its first real step in reaching a Western market by purchasing the Mi.com domain. The simple fact of the matter is that Xiaomi is a tough name for many to remember... So, Xiaomi has decided to simplify its URL branding to just Mi.com.  Impressively, Xiaomi dropped a record $3.6 million on the domain name. This makes it the most expensive domain purchased by a Chinese company, and the 17th most expensive URL of all time."
