Global Carbon Dioxide Emissions: China Is The World's Worst Polluter

source: statista.com
As industrialization and globalization picked up over the past four decades, so has greenhouse gas emissions. China’s share of global carbon dioxide emissions has ballooned from 8 percent of the world’s total in 1980 to 52 percent of the world’s total in 2017.

How the US Embassy Tweeted to Clear Beijing's Air | WIRED.com:
"In 2008, everyone knew Beijing was polluted, but we didn't know how much. That year, the US Embassy in Beijing installed a rooftop air-quality monitor that cost the team about as much as a nice car. The device began automatically tweeting out data every hour to inform US citizens of the pollution’s severity @beijingair [embed below]."

IEA Report Forecasts USA Dominating Global Oil Markets Going Forward

World Energy Outlook 2017: A world in transformation

WEO-2017, the International Energy Agency’s flagship publication, finds that over the next two decades the global energy system is being reshaped by major forces: the United States is set to become the undisputed global oil and gas leader; renewables are being deployed rapidly thanks to falling costs; the share of electricity in the energy mix is growing, and China’s new economic strategy takes it on a cleaner growth mode. International Energy Agency (domain: iea.org) video first published Nov 14, 2017. Learn more at http://www.iea.org/weo2017.

The latest report from the IEA.org forecasts an oil market dominated by the United States. See the report at Oil 2018 | iea.org as well as a Bloomberg.com video Mar 5, 2018.

  • Oil reserves | Oil | Statistical Review of World Energy | Energy economics | BP.com: "Global proved oil reserves in 2016 rose by 15 billion barrels (0.9%) to 1707 billion barrels, which would be sufficient to meet 50.6 years of global production at 2016 levels."
  • WEO Analysis: A sea change in the global oil trade | iea.org: "The surge in tight oil output from the United States has already triggered major changes in the dynamics of global oil supply and prices. Through a decline in imports and a surge in exports, US tight oil is now having a similarly profound impact on global crude oil trade. Crude oil imports to the United States fell by more than 1.3 million barrels a day (mb/d) between 2010 and 2016, to 7.9 mb/d. At the same time, since the ban on crude oil exports was lifted in late 2015, US exports have skyrocketed to over 1 mb/d in October 2017, and have expanded their range of destinations from a single country, Canada, to more than 30 countries across Latin America, Europe and Asia. Looking to the future, WEO projections in the New Policies Scenario suggest a continued fall in US net crude oil imports, from more than 7 mb/d today to less than 3 mb/d by 2040. Meanwhile, net product exports double from 2 mb/d to almost 4 mb/d over the same period, pushing the overall net oil trade balance of the United States into positive territory by the late-2020s, an astonishing turnaround."
  • Momentous Shift in US Natural Gas, with Global Consequences | WolfStreet.com: "The LNG export trade in the US is powered by the huge price differential between natural gas in the US — where a “glut” has crushed prices since 2009 — and what large LNG importers such as Japan and Korea are paying in the global LNG markets."
  • In the Oil Patch, Bigger Is No Longer Better | WSJ.com: investors are growing leery of free-spending energy firms, but like the discipline of ConocoPhillips.
  • Old Fields Die Hard | WolfStreet.com:"thriftier times have called for a re-strategizing and getting back to basics. This means focusing on existing wells and mature oil fields instead of drilling and prospecting in a short-term effort to get more oil more cheaply and efficiently. It’s all a response to the same issue — low oil prices — but with exactly the opposite approach from OPEC ..."

Election Night 2016 Redux, Donald Trump's Triumph via Twitter

Just one month ago, Donald Trump shocked the elites and establishment media by winning the 2016 election to become the 45th President of the United States, garnering a total of 306 electoral votes (only 270 electoral votes are needed to win) to Hillary Clinton's 232 electoral votes:
"... Hillary and her Clinton campaign organization, and Clinton supporters, were in such shock and disbelief on election night. Hillary couldn't even emotionally handle showing up to concede at the Javits Center election night, but instead, sent John Podesta who told everybody to 'go home.'"--Why Hillary Lost | DomainMondo.com.
Email received in early December by the Editor of Domain Mondo from a Manhattanite who holds a senior position at a major Wall Street firm:
"Like many others, I was surprised by the results of the election.  I guess I was persuaded by the polls that indicated that Hillary Clinton would win ... She also had a significant advantage in the Electoral College [according to the pundits and pollsters' projections] ...  On election night, I attended two parties given by major donors to the Democratic Party.  When I arrived at each the mood was upbeat (one was black tie–preferred in anticipation of a celebratory occasion). By nine o’clock the crowd was becoming despondent and by eleven most had left.  I thought I would try to get some sleep around midnight and called a Washington contact whom I knew was staying up all night. I asked him to call me when the outcome was certain.  He didn't call, but sent me an email at 1:42am saying that Pennsylvania had gone for Donald Trump and it was over.  Pennsylvania!"
Twitter.com May Have Predicted the Election | technologyreview.com: "The votes for Brexit and Donald Trump contradicted pollsters, but some researchers say Twitter was sending accurate signals all along ..."

"... a Senate Judiciary subcommittee, chaired by Senator Cruz (a skeptic of the transition), will have a hearing on Wednesday at which both the [Obama] Administration and the new CEO of ICANN will appear. (I will be testifying as well, but on the second panel—the fireworks will be on the first panel, I'm sure.) What will come of this?  Only time will tell."--Paul Rosenzweig, The ICANN and IANA Transition End Game | LawfareBlog.com (emphasis added)
The IANA Stewardship Transition will be complete on October 1, 2016, unless House and Senate Republicans are successful in their effort to delay the transition and extend the IANA functions contract which will otherwise expire September 30, 2016. The Wednesday hearing was called by U.S. Senator Ted Cruz, the Subcommittee Chair, who opposes the IANA Stewardship Transition.

and U.S. GAO - National Telecommunications and Information Administration--Effect of Section 539 of the Commerce, Justice, Science, and Related Agencies Appropriations Act, 2016 on Amounts Appropriated Under a Continuing Resolution | gao.gov Sep 12, 2016: "... Section 539(b) provides that “Notwithstanding any other law, subsection (a) of this section shall not apply in fiscal year 2017.” However, section 539(b) would have no effect on the applicability of the prohibition contained in section 539(a) to funds appropriated by a typical continuing resolution. Therefore, NTIA could not use amounts appropriated under a continuing resolution to relinquish its responsibilities with respect to the Internet domain name system. However, during fiscal year 2017, section 539(b) extinguishes the prohibition of section 539(a) for any balances of the two-year appropriations (for fiscal years 2016 and 2017) enacted under the 2016 Appropriation that remain available for obligation in fiscal year 2017. Thus in fiscal year 2017 [beginning October 1, 2016] NTIA could use unobligated balances appropriated by the 2016 Appropriation to relinquish these responsibilities." US Court of Appeals Decision re: ICANN & Iran, Syria, North Korea ccTLDs

28 U.S.C. § 1610 (g)(3): Exceptions to the immunity from attachment or execution: "(3) Third-party joint property holders. - Nothing in this subsection shall be construed to supersede the authority of a court to prevent appropriately the impairment of an interest held by a person who is not liable in the action giving rise to a judgment in property subject to attachment in aid of execution, or execution, upon such judgment."
Embedded below is the full decision of the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, August 2, 2016, which affirmed the judgment of the U.S. District Court that the ccTLDs of Iran, Syria, and North Korea are unattachable under District of Columbia (D.C.) law.

The Court of Appeals, while assuming arguendo that the ccTLDs were attachable property, nonetheless relied upon 28 USC §1610(g)(3)--quoted above--in its opinion at pages 28-29:
"We assume without deciding that the ccTLDs the plaintiffs seek constitute “property” under the FSIA and, further, that the defendant sovereigns have some attachable ownership interest in them. Nonetheless, pursuant to the terrorist activity exception, the court has the “authority” to “prevent appropriately the impairment of an interest held by a person who is not liable in the action giving rise to a judgment”—i.e., we are expressly authorized to protect the interests of ICANN and other entities. 28 U.S.C. § 1610(g)(3). Because of the enormous third-party interests at stake—and because there is no way to execute on the plaintiffs’ judgments without impairing those interests—we cannot permit attachment." (emphasis added)
While the Appellants have options to seek review en banc by the Court of Appeals, and even review by the U.S. Supreme Court, our analysis and opinion is that this is a well-reasoned decision that removes the "wild card" referenced in the Domain Mondo News Review and Litigation Report, July 31, 2016.

Chinese Cybercrime Reshapes Geopolitics, US-China Joint Dialogue

Chinese Cybercrime Reshapes Geopolitics
Security firm IID* [internetidentity.com; twitter: @iidactivetrust] predicts that if the downturn in the Chinese economy continues, this could drive exponential growth of organized cybercriminal enterprises within China. IID expects that by 2017 “persistent criminal enterprises” in China will rival and ultimately surpass Eastern European organized cybercrime in scope, size and complexity. IID also predicts that the Russian Chinese Cyber Alliance will dissolve by 2019, after Chinese cybercriminal organizations begin targeting Eastern European citizens, companies and even rival cybercrime organizations. IID also predicts that by 2020, China will become a leading proponent of Internet security in response to its own citizens and banks being increasingly victimized by cyberattacks that threaten the Chinese economy.

US-China Joint Dialogue
The United States Department of Justice announced that on December. 1, 2015, in Washington, D.C., Attorney General Loretta E. Lynch and Department of Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson, together with Chinese State Councilor Guo Shengkun, co-chaired the first U.S.-China High-Level Joint Dialogue on Cybercrime and Related Issues. Pursuant to the commitments made by U.S. President Barack Obama and Chinese President Xi Jinping during the state visit in September 2015, the primary objectives of the dialogue were to review the timeliness and quality of responses to requests for information and assistance with respect to cybercrime or other malicious cyber activities and to enhance cooperation between the United States and China.

In addition to members of the Departments of Justice and Homeland Security, representatives from the Department of State, National Security Council and Intelligence Community participated for the United States, while the Chinese delegation included representatives from the Committee of Political and Legal Affairs of CPC Central Committee, the Ministry of Public Security, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the Ministry of State Security, the Ministry of Justice and the State Internet Information Office.

Discussions included ways to enhance cooperation within the bounds of each nation’s legal framework and assessments of progress made on cases identified during their discussions in September 2015. Specific outcomes:

1. Guidelines for Combatting Cybercrime and Related Issues. Attorney General Lynch, Secretary Johnson and State Councilor Guo reached agreement on a document establishing guidelines for requesting assistance on cybercrime or other malicious cyber activities and for responding to such requests. These guidelines will establish common understanding and expectations regarding the information to be included in such requests and the timeliness of responses.

2.Tabletop Exercise. Both sides decided to conduct a tabletop exercise in the spring of 2016 on agreed-upon cybercrime, malicious cyber activity and network protection scenarios to increase mutual understanding regarding their respective authorities, processes and procedures. During the tabletop exercise, both sides will assess China’s proposal for a seminar on combatting terrorist misuse of technology and communications, and will consider the U.S.’s proposal on inviting experts to conduct network protection exchanges.

3. Hotline Mechanism. Both sides decided to develop the scope, goals and procedures for use of the hotline before the next High-Level Dialogue.

4. Enhance Cooperation on Combatting Cyber-Enabled Crime and Related Issues. Both sides decided to further develop case cooperation on combatting cyber-enabled crimes, including child exploitation, theft of trade secrets, fraud and misuse of technology and communications for terrorist activities, and to enhance exchanges on network protection. Both sides decided to improve cooperation among the relevant agencies, within the framework of the high-level dialogue, on network protection issues. U.S. and Chinese cyber incident and network protection experts will meet on Dec. 3, 2015, and will continue to meet regularly during future dialogues.

5. Second U.S.-China High-Level Joint Dialogue on Cybercrime and Related Issues. Attorney General Lynch, Secretary Johnson and State Councilor Guo decided to schedule the second U.S.-China High-Level Dialogue on Combatting Cybercrime and Related Issues in June 2016. The dialogue will take place in Beijing, China. Source: OPA | Department of Justice

"As I have said before, the daily machinations of the stock market are like a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing. One of my favorite rules is 'Don't peek.' Don't let all the noise drown out your common sense and your wisdom. Just try not to pay that much attention, because it will have no effect whatsoever, categorically, on your lifetime investment returns."--Jack Bogle, Vanguard Group (domain name: vanguard.com) (quote source: Marketwatch)

"Put 10% of the cash in short-term government bonds and 90% in very low-cost S&P 500 index fund. (I suggest Vanguard's [VFINX].) “Returns are created not by the stock market, they are created by U.S. business, our corporations ... If you go back and look at the history of American business over the last century, you will find the [price/earnings] effect of stocks is zero. The success of Silicon Valley is attributable, in large part, to the capital markets of the United States. How did Apple, Google, et al become among the most valuable corporations in the world with total market capitalization values of hundreds of billions (USD) dollars each? Why did Alibaba Group, a Chinese internet company, select the NYSE for its IPO?

Take a real good look at this map.
The world's free-float market capitalization (USD$ billions) by nation:
1. United States 19,731
2. Japan 3,006
3. United Kingdom 2,691
China? 889.

Bank of America: These Five Maps Show the Major Global Trends Investors Need to Know - Bloomberg Business: "American Equity Exceptionalism: As of July 31 (2015), the market capitalization of U.S. stocks totaled nearly $20 trillion (as measured by MSCI), marking the reemergence of America's dominance among global stock markets."The U.S. currently represents 52 percent of world market capitalization, the highest since the 1980s," says BofAML.America's hefty share of global equity-market capitalization has been buoyed this year by a continuation of the U.S. dollar's appreciation against other major currencies."

Angel funding, venture capital, deal flow, even the domain name industry (e.g., GoDaddy IPO), are, in large part, dependent upon free capital markets. China has the world's largest internet population, but as this past week showed, they are lacking in free capital markets, as well as free speech and high GNI per capita. These are big problems that China has yet to confront. In addition, China is no longer the "low-cost" producer of the world's goods--the one competitive advantage it had. However, China's present and future tribulations will likely have a big impact on the world economy for the foreseeable future.

Caveat Emptor!
