Tech Review | Russia, Tech, & Elections: We Have Met The Enemy, She Is

Tech Review (TR 2017-11-04)--Domain Mondo's weekly review of tech news with commentary, analysis and opinion: Features • 1) Elections, Tech, & Russia: We Have Met The Enemy, She Is, 2) Google Has a New Plan for China, 3) Investing: a. The Week, b. Amazon Doesn't Care About Profits, c. What You Need To Know About Alibaba $BABA d. Cryptocurrency Speculators, e. 80/20 Rule? 4) ICYMI Tech News.

1) Russia, Tech, & Elections: We Have Met The Enemy, She Is:
Hillary Clinton’s Secret Takeover of the DNC | POLITICO.com: "When I was asked to run the Democratic Party after the Russians hacked our emails, I stumbled onto a shocking truth about the Clinton campaign ..."--by Donna Brazile, November 02, 2017.  See also:
  • Twitter Admits It Buried "Podesta Email" Tweets Ahead Of The Presidential Election | ZeroHedge.com: "... A question emerges: did Jack Dorsey [CEO of Twitter], with his arbitrary decision to censor specific content damaging to Democrats, interfere with the election, and a funnier question: if Hillary lost with Twitter censoring anti-Hillary content, what would the outcome have been if Twitter actually respected the First Amendment?
  • Facebook $FB says Trump and Clinton spent $81,000,000 total, Russian agency $46,000--TechCrunch.com, and Elizabeth Warren: "Yes," Democratic Primary Was Rigged For Hillary.
  • Thousands attended anti-Trump protest organized by Russian-linked group on Facebook--TheHill.com, and "A U.S. political party [DNC] applied to a hostile power [Russia] for lurid stories about a domestic opponent."--The Trump Dossier Dam Is Breaking | WSJ.com.
  • DNC Chair Wasserman Schultz Shunned FBI, Hid Security Breach From DNC Officials--ZeroHedge.com.
  • Mainstream Media Now Claiming That It Is 'A Crime' To Investigate Hillary Clinton's Ties To Russia--ZeroHedge.com.

2)  Google $GOOGL $GOOG Has a New Plan for China: Artificial intelligence, not search--Google actively promoting TensorFlow in China, Alphabet putting scouts on ground from Google and CapitalG units to look at Chinese companies for potential AI investments--Bloomberg.com. See also: Google Cannot Be Stopped | TheAtlantic.com: "The company's global ad business is now larger than that of Facebook, Alibaba, Baidu, Twitter, Amazon and Snap, combined."

3) Investing
a. The Week: As expected, the Federal Reserve left rates unchanged at 1.00%--1.25% and President Trump nominated Jerome Powell to be the next Chair of the Federal Reserve when Janet Yellen's term expires in February, 2018. Markets: U.S. stocks finished the week by breaking another set of records on Friday, as all three major benchmarks closed at highs due to strong Apple earnings and ISM nonmanufacturing data for October. Apple $AAPL shares soared to $900 billion in market cap after reporting earnings and iPhone X guidance.

b. Amazon $AMZN doesn't care about profits: "The aim is not to make money on any particular service; Amazon likely lost $7.2 billion on shipping last year and is selling hardware supporting its virtual assistant Alexa around or below cost. It’s adding to the value of the system itself. Entire industries are loss leaders for Amazon. For companies that must make money on what they sell, it’s a terrifying prospect."--QZ.com See also: Amazon: “Our view is that just because Amazon can disrupt somebody else’s profit stream, it doesn’t mean that Amazon earns that profit stream. For the moment, the market doesn’t agree. Perhaps, simply being disruptive is enough.”--Einhorn Vents his Frustrations about the Crazy Markets | WolfStreet.com.

c. What You Need to Know About Alibaba Group Holding Ltd $BABA: "BABA stock is pricey, trading at a jaw-dropping 17x sales. Even Amazon, which is rarely called a cheap stock, sells at just 3x its sales. Is a dollar of Alibaba revenues worth almost five times as much as a dollar of Amazon’s sales? ... The company’s [Alibaba] accounting system is complex, to say the least. And it seems that JD.com is catching up to them on their home turf, particularly in terms of delivery technology. Alibaba’s frenetic rush for growth may leave them exposed on their home turf. In any case, with the stock up more than 100% year-to-date, this probably isn’t the best time to be buying shares."--InvestorPlace.com

d. Cryptocurrency speculators are chasing profits in a world where all risks appear to have been removed by years of central bank liquidity that is trying to find a place to go.--Big Bitcoin Investor Believes Bitcoin Might Still Go to “Zero,” Just Riding the Momentum | WolfStreet.com: “My view on bitcoin is that it is a technological experiment that may or may not prove to have any long lasting value. Bitcoin has a market capitalization greater than 90% of the companies in the S&P 500, but it still might fail. I don’t know and neither does anyone else, no matter how certain they are of their opinion.”  See also Coinbase Adds A Record 100,000 Bitcoin Traders In One Day | ZeroHedge.com,

4) ICYMI Tech News:
  • Qualcomm accuses Apple of sharing proprietary information with Intel--TheHill.com.
  • Reuters.com: App developer access to iPhone X face data spooks some privacy experts.
  • Effectively Handing U.S. Government Purchasing Power Over to Amazon--theintercept.com.
  • The Nokia 2 is a very cheap Android phone with a huge battery: "99 Euros for a smartphone that promises two days of use"--engadget.com.

(We’ve been using the [New York] Times as our case study ... because their 2016 coverage had so many problems.) ... MacroView: Three Weeks In, 'Trump Team USA' Is Clearly Winning

MacroView | ©2016 DomainMondo.com
Domain Mondo's weekly review of  macro economic and investing news:

MacroView Feature •  Ignore the MSM noise, fake news, and click bait; take off your NYTimes-WaPo goggles, and take another look: with just 3 weeks under their belt, Trump Team USA is clearly winning despite some "rookie mistakes"--

•  Majority in US Now Optimistic About Job Market | Gallup.com: "For the first time since Gallup began tracking the question in 2001, a majority of Americans (54%) say it is a "good time" to find a quality job."

•  Daily Presidential Tracking Poll | RasmussenReports.com Friday, February 10, 2017: The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Friday shows that 52% of Likely U.S. Voters approve of President Trump’s job performance.

•  “We support the [Trump] Administration’s policies to level the global playing field and make U.S. manufacturing competitive worldwide through new regulatory standards and investment policies.”--Intel CEO Brian Krzanich in an email to Intel employees.--Intel and Trump tout new $7 billion investment to create 10000 jobs | TheHill.com: Intel Corp. announced a $7 billion investment Wednesday [Feb 8, 2017] that the company projects will create 10,000 new jobs. The company will use the $7 billion to complete its Fab 42 factory in Chandler, Arizona, Intel CEO Brian Krzanich said at a meeting at the White House with President Trump. Krzanich said the decision to make the announcement with the White House was borne out of Intel’s support for Trump’s economic and trade policies.

•  Trump will get all of his Cabinet picks confirmed despite the dysfunction, obstruction, and delay tactics of "loser" Democrats on Capitol Hill.

•  Wall Street hits records again, boosted by Trump economy hopes | Reuters.com:
The Trump Rally extends its run: DJIA and S&P 500 Index (source: google.com)
•  Despite manifold predictions and chatter among Trump's critics and doomsayers inside the beltway and the coastal bubbles, this new administration hasn't come close to the disasters of other new first term Presidents. Want some facts? John F. Kennedy took office on January 20, 1961. Only 74 days after taking office, President Kennedy approved, on April 4, 1961, the CIA's disastrous Bay of Pigs invasion plan. The resulting damage to U.S. prestige globally, and foreign relations with Cuba and beyond, has now lasted for generations, but MSM doesn't want you to remember that. Journalist Glenn Greenwald nails it including the current MSM mindset:
•  Dear Europe re: NATO--Trump says US taxpayers no longer willing to be EU's paying patsy--NATO's target for all of  NATO's 28 member states is that defense spending equal 2 per cent of each member state's economic output. At present, only the US, UK, Estonia, Poland and Greece meet the target (even NATO member Canada falls short!). One accounting shows Germany should spend $30 billion more each year, Italy $18 billion, Spain $16 billion, and France $6 billion. One problem: increases in defense spending for many EU nations would put them in violation of EU budgetary rules, which means EU members may have to re-allocate their spending to meet NATO's target, perhaps cutting their contributions to the EU budget?--more at FT.com.

•  Chaos and confusion in the EU as "kicking the can" and "extend and pretend" nears the end, and Poland and other nations demand an overhaul of the European Union.
•  At least the UK hasn't floundered and is on track for Brexit, even UK Prime Minister May is now "prepared to walk away from the European Union (EU) without a deal"--

Who's Afraid of Brexit?  According to a PwC study, the UK's economy is set to grow faster than any other major advanced economy up until 2050, even if the UK takes a significant financial hit as a result of its exit from the European Union:

Trump and the ‘One China’ policy

US President Donald Trump has told Chinese president Xi Jinping that he will respect the “One China” policy, in his first conversation with the Chinese leader since entering the Oval Office. The move is expected to ease tensions between the two powers. Video above published by FT.com Feb 10, 2017.

•  It's Not Just Trump Derangement Syndrome affecting Coastal Bubble Elites and MSM: Some investors [and news media] really are this stupid | evidenceinvestor.co.uk: "The Super Bowl Indicator is, of course, complete and utter nonsense. But that still hasn’t stopped at least half a dozen semi-respectable media outlets in the United States discussing its significance over the last few days."

One More Thing:
"If man is not to do more harm than good in his efforts to improve the social order, he will have to learn that in this, as in all other fields where essential complexity of an organized kind prevails, he cannot acquire the full knowledge which would make mastery of the events possible. He will therefore have to use what knowledge he can achieve, not to shape the results as the craftsman shapes his handiwork, but rather to cultivate a growth by providing the appropriate environment, in the manner in which the gardener does this for his plants.”--Friedrich von Hayek, Nobel Prize Lecture 1974

MacroView: First Nine Days of President Trump with Many More To Come

MacroView | ©2016 DomainMondo.com
Domain Mondo's weekly review of  macro economic and investing news:

MacroView Feature •  Trump has now been President for nine days (noon Jan 20 - noon Jan 29) as I write this--and for those who really think that Friday Executive Order is the only thing that matters, I'll get this out of the way up front, read: Donald Trump’s Refugee Executive Order: No Muslim Ban -- Separating Fact from Hysteria | NationalReview.com.

I agree with Jim VandeHei and Mike Allen writing in Axios.com:
"We can't stress this enough: Watch closely the specific, substantive moves of the Trump White House. Try to block out the white noise of outlandish statements and unforced errors, and the hyperventilating they provoke. Otherwise, you miss the big — and in some cases, radical — changes coming our way. In fact, White House officials tell us they welcome what seem like needless distractions, because it allows them to jam through transformative, disruptive ideas and orders without focused public scrutiny of any particular item ... Read the weekend papers, and flick through cable, and the unambiguous conclusion is that Trump's debut was pretty much a debacle. But was it? If you examine what he did based on what he wants to do and ignore much of what he says for show, this was actually a remarkably productive start. By the White House's count, 13 presidential actions in first week tied to specific campaign promises ..." (emphasis added, read more at link above)
Here's a quick look at some of what Trump did in his first nine days:

The biggest problem for investors and the general public right now is getting accurate news and information without all the hype, hysteria and drama. The news media (MSM) are wellsprings of disinformation and misinformation--Trump's Steve Bannon:
"I'm not talking about everybody, but a big portion of the media--the dishonesty, total deceit and deception. It makes them certainly partially the opposition party, absolutely. I think they're much more capable than the opposition party. The opposition party is losing badly. Now the media is on the opposition party's side."
And as Mike Allen and Jim VandeHei wrote above, the sideshows and media hysteria distract from the real events occurring in plain sight and under the radar that investors (and the public) need to know about. Unfortunately, mainstream media never got over getting the election so wrong ("Trump has no path to 270 electoral votes"), so they abandoned all pretense of journalistic ethics, and wasted weeks unsuccessfully working hand-in-hand with the neo-con/neo-liberal Washington establishment in an attempt to de-legitimize Trump's election, a media crusade which probably reached its nadir with Obama's Democratic-appointee-led "intelligence community" leaking (directly or indirectly), a smear in the form of an unvetted "Russian dossier" published by BuzzFeed which was then given wide coverage through links on CNN and coverage by other major media news operations.

Read: The Reason You Can’t Stand the News Anymore. | Medium.com: "The methods used to fund modern journalism simultaneously undermine trust in the news outlets." That's right, the business models of most news organizations are broken and they are failing financially. Google and Facebook are sucking up most digital ad revenues. News media are desperately competing for clicks, and it is showing--the public have lost trust in the media. Even Margaret Sullivan of the Washington Post has taken notice.

So what's an investor (or member of the general public) to do? Unless you want to be swamped by the distortion, noise, spin, and outright false or #FakeNews, you have to carefully consider the source of anything you read or hear, and take time to curate your sources of "news and information." Here's one list I've curated.

Other Macro Economic and Investing News:

•  Jeff Gundlach predicted Trump would win, what's he think now? "It’s typical for the stock market to go up until the inauguration and then fall. It happened with Ronald Reagan, too. I think we will see something similar—it will have a pullback, at a minimum. There will be an attempt to build infrastructure and borrow a lot of money to do it. There will be potential for a pick-up in growth, an increase in interest rates, which has already happened, and potential for inflation."--Invest Like a Legend: Jeffrey Gundlach | TheGlobeandMail.com: "... being successful in investing is to understand human nature."

•  Economist: Stock Market Gained $2T in Wealth Since Trump Elected | FoxNews.com and U.S. Rally Is the Envy of Stock Markets Worldwide | WSJ.com: "... U.S. stock markets have rallied since the President’s victory more than two months ago, rising on improved economic data and hopes Mr. Trump can stimulate the economy with tax cuts and infrastructure spending while rolling back regulations. But most major stock markets around the globe haven’t enjoyed the same postelection bump, and many remain far below their record levels ..."

•  Brexit Update: London Bankers May Dodge One-Way Trip to Frankfurt | Lipper Alpha Insight | ThomsonReuters.com.

•  Trump Effect? California's stormy winter sets snowfall record for Mammoth resorts (over 20 feet in one month): "The Sierra Nevada snowpack, which provides a third of the state’s water when it melts in the spring and summer, is at nearly 200% of average for this time of year. Many of the state’s biggest reservoirs are full, and much of the northern half of the state is considered to be out of drought conditions. More storms are on the way, state climatologists said."--LATimes.com

One More Thing:  Pundits, Facts and the Future | Bloomberg.com: "News media provide an opportunity for rampant confirmation bias ... for investors, as most of what is news is not only old, it often already is reflected in market prices ... "

MacroView | Market Outlook for 2017: Trump Effect, Optimism, Risks

2017: Year of the Charging Bull?

MacroView | ©2016 DomainMondo.com
Domain Mondo's weekly review of  macro economic and investing news:

MacroView Feature •  Market Outlook for 2017, Trump Effect, Optimism, Risks To Watch For in 2017:

•  Re-Energized U.S. Dollar Looms Over the Rest of the World | WSJ.com: "On Wall Street, the rising dollar has been one of the most visible signals of growing optimism in the U.S. economy ... Expectations of fiscal stimulus under President-elect Donald Trump “have absolutely re-energized the dollar,” said Alan Ruskin, head of G10 foreign exchange strategy at Deutsche Bank. “This is a major shift in policy dynamics” ... Roughly 60% of clients surveyed by Citigroup believe the dollar will be either “moderately higher” or “sharply higher” against developed and emerging market currencies next year."

•  Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA):

The Trump Effect has so far generated confidence and optimism in the markets and economy but will it continue in 2017? Despite the efforts of the Obama administration to kill the post-election Trump Rally by having Secretary of State John Kerry openly condemn Israel, abstaining on the UN vote against Israel, and engaging in dubious geo-political retribution--"Obama Strikes Back at Russia for Election Hacking" | NYTimes.com--the Dow Jones Industrial Average still managed to close for the year on Dec. 30, 2016, up 7.8% since Trump's election on Nov. 8, 2016 (see chart above).

Fortunately for U.S. and global markets, Putin is looking ahead "to cultivate relations with Trump" and has decided Russia will not retaliate, for now, against U.S. acts of provocation in these final, apparently dysfunctional, last days of the Obama administration:
  • White House fails to make case that Russian hackers tampered with election | ArsTechnica.com
  • FBI/DHS Joint Analysis Report: A Fatally Flawed Effort | Medium.com: "If the White House had unclassified evidence that tied officials in the Russian government to the DNC attack, they would have presented it by now. The fact that they didn’t means either that the evidence doesn’t exist or that it is classified. If it’s classified, an independent commission should review it because this entire assignment of blame against the Russian government is looking more and more like a domestic political operation run by the White House that relied heavily on questionable intelligence generated by a for-profit cybersecurity firm with a vested interest in selling “attribution-as-a-service”." (emphasis added)
  • Something About This Russia Story Stinks | RollingStone.com
  • Exit Obama in a Cloud of Disillusion, Delusion and Deceit | CraigMurray.org: "... He [Obama] now goes out of power with absolutely no grace and in a storm of delusion and deceit. His purpose is apparently to weaken Trump politically, but to achieve that at the expense of heightening tensions with Russia to Cold War levels, is shameful. The very pettiness of Obama’s ... minor sanctions and expelling some diplomatic families – itself shows that Obama is lying about the pretext. If he really believed that Russia had “hacked the election”, surely that would require a much less feeble response. By refusing to retaliate, Russia has shown the kind of polish that eludes Obama as he takes his empty charisma and presentational skills into a no doubt lucrative future in the private sector."--Craig Murray, former UK Ambassador (emphasis added).

•  2017 Risks: 2017 Elections in France (April-June) and Germany (August-October): The West Should Hope That Merkel Loses | ForeignPolicy.com.

Could Marine Le Pen be elected the next President of France?:

Could Marine Le Pen be elected the next President of France? Populist movements are on the rise all over Europe—one reason why the French presidential election in 2017 may be a nail-biter. Video above published December 28, 2016 by Economist.com.

•  China: The rising U.S. dollar has exacerbated capital outflows and tightening liquidity in China. Chinese stocks and bond markets have fallen since Trump's election, and Chinese regulators have injected money to allay a possible credit squeeze. China’s central bank had already drained $300 billion of its reserves in the first three quarters of 2016, more than it spent in all of 2015, in an attempt to slow the Chinese yuan’s decline against the U.S. dollar. According to WSJ.com, China’s currency is down 4.3% against the dollar since October, falling to a record low.

No trade wars, but watch a new trading book with China | cnbc.com: "Washington's intent to correct its huge trade imbalance with China is not coming as a surprise to Beijing. The Zhongnanhai mandarins know that their trade surpluses with the U.S. -- $366 billion in 2015 and $289 billion in the first ten months of this year -- are difficult issues that must be addressed. That is the substance of the problem. The rest is rhetoric."

Chinese media praise Trump's 'experience and ideology' | Yahoo.com (Nov. 15, 2016): "Chinese state-run media lauded Donald Trump Tuesday after a phone call between him and President Xi Jinping, saying that the president-elect's emergence could mark a "reshaping" of Sino-American relations. The pair spoke Monday, when Xi said that the two powers needed to co-operate and Trump's office said the leaders "established a clear sense of mutual respect for one another" ... Monday's conversation was "diplomatically impeccable and has bolstered optimism over bilateral relations in the next four years", China's frequently nationalistic Global Times newspaper said in an editorial."

Power grab at China’s National Congress in October 2017?

In China, the Communist Party’s 19th National Congress in October 2017 determines who will rule the world’s rising superpower for the next five years. Amid bitter political infighting, the changes will be sweeping. Video above published Dec 27, 2016, by Economist.com.

•  From Russia with Love: "Mr. Putin’s popularity really is very high [in Russia]: around 70 percent. During the 2015-16 recession, G.D.P. fell by more than 4 percent and real incomes declined by 10 percent. That is significant, but much less serious than, say, the 40 percent drop in G.D.P. that Russia experienced during the first half of the 1990s. Despite a dramatic decline in oil prices and the burden of sanctions imposed by Western governments after the Crimea crisis, the Putin administration has managed to avert economic disaster by pursuing competent macroeconomic policies."--NYTimes.com

•  Good Question: How Well Will Trump Get Along With His Own Cabinet? | MishTalk.com. But maybe Trump really likes having a diversity of opinions unlike Dem-libs who talk of 'diversity' but only tolerate 'conformity' in opinions:
Joe Scarborough on 2016 Election Results a 'Complete Earthquake' | Morning Joe | MSNBC.com Nov 9, 2016: "... talk about elephant in the room (media) here ... everything that we've all talked about they [the media] could have seen it coming, but the media was all in on this narrative [Clinton will win, Trump has no path to 270 electoral votes] and it was just everybody [in media] was marching in lockstep 'Clinton's going to win, Clinton's going to win.' Early voting came out and I was doing one of those little '270 to win' maps. I immediately looked at early voting and I moved North Carolina and Florida to Trump. You would have thought I hung a Nazi flag in front of my house and everybody was talking about Florida is 'in the bag' (for Clinton) and I kept looking at the numbers and I kept thinking I know this state [Florida], I know north Florida, but every single analyst said there was no way Trump was going to win Florida ... (Mika interjecting: 'Trump has no path to 270 electoral votes we were told repeatedly.')"
For the record, Trump won 306 electoral votes, Clinton only 232. So much for the old legacy media's propaganda, fake news, and failed attempt to suppress Trump voter turnout by incessantly publishing their false narrative: "Trump has no path to 270 electoral votes."

•  2016's Biggest Losers: 1. Old Legacy Media (i.e., New York Times, Washington Post, ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN, et al); 2. Dem-Lib Elites (mainly in Washington, D.C., New York and California); 3. Bill & Hillary Clinton; 4. Democratic Party; 5. Obama; see The whole Democratic Party is now a smoking pile of rubble | Vox.com: "The down-ballot party has withered, and Obama’s policy legacy will be largely repealed," and  The Case Against the Media, by the Media | NYMag.com: "... it’s not just Trump; dire signs for media were everywhere this year."

•  One More Thing: People are now using the term “fake news” to refer to discredited reports from mainstream media (MSM), and the New York Times is surprised? LOL! See: Fake News: TheGuardian.com Caught Deceptively Editing Quotes from Julian Assange Interview | Breitbart.com and Something About This Russia Story Stinks | RollingStone.com: "... it's OK [now] to publish an allegation when you yourself are not confident in what your source is saying is a major departure from what was previously thought to be the norm in a paper like the [Washington] Post."
The Guardian’s Summary of Julian Assange’s Interview Went Viral and Was Completely False | TheIntercept.com: "This article is about how those false claims — fabrications, really — were spread all over the internet by journalists, causing hundreds of thousands of people (if not millions) to consume false news. The purpose of this article is to underscore, yet again, that those who most flamboyantly denounce Fake News, and want Facebook and other tech giants to suppress content in the name of combating it, are often the most aggressive and self-serving perpetrators of it."--Glenn Greenwald

TechReview: Facebook's Anti-Trump Fake News, Was It Effective?

Domain Mondo's weekly review of technology news:

Feature •  Facebook anti-Trump fake-news writer: "There’s nothing you can’t write about now that [some] people won’t believe. I can write the craziest thing about Trump, and [some anti-Trump] people will believe it. I wrote a lot of crazy anti-Muslim stuff — like about Trump wanting to put badges on Muslims, or not allowing them in the airport, or making them stand in their own line — and [some] people went along with [believed] it!"--WashingtonPost.com

In other words, if you were a Hillary supporter you were more likely to believe anything derogatory about Trump you saw published online (and the reverse was likewise true for Trump supporters). Is anyone surprised by this? You shouldn't be--followers applaud fake news that agrees with their own pre-existing opinions, and people who disagree are more likely to be the fact checkers.

But does fake news change opinions? The answer is: No. Why? Confirmation bias--"people aggressively avoid ideas that challenge their basic philosophy and opinions. Social media has become an echo chamber, an exercise in preaching to the choir and other members of your own tribe. I’ll end this by posing just one request: If anyone switched their vote because of a Facebook post or a 140-character squib on Twitter, please let me know. I’ll be waiting."--Barry Ritholtz, Facebook Didn't Tilt the Election | Bloomberg.com.

The real problem isn't "fake news," instead it is the "misinformation crisis" in mainstream media (MSM)--According to Snopes, Fake News Is Not the Problem | backchannel.com: "... The misinformation crisis, according to Binkowski, stems from something more pernicious. In the past, the sources of accurate information were recognizable enough that phony news was relatively easy for a discerning reader to identify and discredit. The problem, Binkowski believes, is that the public has lost faith in the media broadly — therefore no media outlet is considered credible any longer ..." And for good reason.

That's why purging what someone arbitrarily or subjectively judges to be "fake news" is nothing less than censorship, the repression of free speech and free market competition in favor of  MSM channels that have lost credibility and trust. Facebook, Twitter, whatever:
Here's where it starts to get scary:
Will the Censorship "Fake News" Purge work? Doubtful. Inside Gab: The New Twitter Alternative Championed By The Alt-Right | FastCompany.com: "The purge is happening. At least according to the universe of alt-right users on social media: Many of them claim that in recent days their Twitter accounts have been suspended and that their posts on Facebook are not being promoted or shared like they used to. It’s all part of a crackdown on "fake news" in the wake of reports that misleading reports shared on Facebook and Twitter helped influence the election. To many, these efforts are an overdue attempt to maintain online civility. But to others it’s blatant censorship."
"Careful studies of media bias in the US show that most newspapers and radio or TV stations don’t try to persuade their readers and viewers; instead, they pander to the biases of their audience. It is hard to combat naive realism because the illusion that we see the world objectively is such a powerful one. At least I’ve not had to worry about it too much myself. Fortunately, my own perspective is based on a careful analysis of the facts, and my political views reflect a cool assessment of reality rather than self-interest, groupthink or cultural bias. Of course, there are people to the left of my position. They’re idiots. And the people on my right? Maniacs."--Tim Harford, Delusions of objectivity
Final Post-Election Memo: What Does The Election Mean For Us?: "President Obama never sold a subscription for us or wrote a line of code for us and neither will Donald Trump. Who the President is will not make us successful (or not successful). That is on us. Ignore the noise."--CBinsights.com

The "News Media" Got the Election WRONG, What Else Are They Missing?

The Biggest LOSER of Election 2016? The "News Media"-- Infographic: Trust in Mass Media Erodes | Statista
source: Statista

Reporting the news "fully, accurately and fairly” used to be one of the most basic requirements for any news outlet that wanted to be taken seriously. But Gallup reports more and more Americans share the impression that the mass media (a/k/a mainstream media or MSM), including TV, radio, newspapers, and MSM websites online, fail to do just that. According to Gallup, Americans’ trust in mass media has dropped to a new low recently, with only 32 percent of U.S. adults expressing at least a fair amount of confidence in mass media to serve as an unbiased chronicler of current affairs. Drill down into the Gallup report and you discover only 14% of Republicans, 30% of independents, and just 26% of Americans 18-49 years old, express trust in the media. Many felt Donald Trump received an unfair amount of negative press, and even Democrats' trust in the news media is declining (though less so than other demographic groups):
"I can’t read the newspaper. Never mind watch television. Donald Trump ran for President in plain sight and these people missed it, all of them. What else are they missing? ... I used to trust the institutions, now I no longer do ... I was at lunch Friday with a heavy hitter, the toppermost of the entertainment world, and I asked him if reporters ever called him … He said ALL THE TIME! Did they know anything? NOTHING! And was the article ever right? NEVER! This happens to me on a regular basis. Some of the most trusted news outlets extant will call me for a quote. The reporter knows nothing about the subject, I take half an hour to explain it and they still get it wrong. Even worse, some of these ignoramuses argue with me because what I’m saying doesn’t fit their narrative."--Bob Lefsetz, Lefsetz.com (disclosure: Bob is a Democrat and voted for Hillary) (emphasis added)
New York Times election forecast:
Bob's suggested remedy? "Someone needs to lose their job over this. Not only Billy Bush, but the person in charge of the polling for the “New York Times,” that person has got to go, the whole team has to go. Actions have consequences ... Judith Miller got us into Iraq, she got booted. Boot a few more!" (emphasis and link added)

Yes, actions have consequences. Want to know about the Presidential race next time, and who's leading? The lesson from Election 2016 is don't trust anything you read, see or hear via the New York Times, Washington Post, ABC, NBC, CBS, CNN, FOX, Wall Street Journal, Bloomberg, et al, especially their polling results. It's most likely just fake news and false narratives.

Contrary to what the mostly biased-left mainstream media (MSM) believe, they are no longer a "trusted source of news" for most Americans. Those who are still watching, reading, listening, and trusting  them, are an increasingly diminishing audience ... hardly anyone cares what MSM says or does anymore because they are increasingly irrelevant. The news media have little credibility left after Election 2016 and that was hardly the beginning of the decline:
