Xiaomi's Hugo Barra: India Growing Like China Five Years Ago (video)

Xiaomi's Hugo Barra on the Mobile Smartphone Market in India - November 10, 2015: Hugo Barra, Xiaomi vice president of global operations for Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi (mi.com), discusses the company's plans for India with Bloomberg's Emily Chang. (Source: Bloomberg)

Xiaomi shipped 18.3 million smartphones in 3Q15, bringing its 2015 total to 52.1 million. While the company continues its pursuit of branching off into Southeast Asia, India, and Brazil, China still remains the sweet spot for the company. Within China, Xiaomi launched the Redmi Note 2, Redmi 2A Prime, as well as the Mi 4c in the third quarter. The Redmi Note 2 was the most popular model among Chinese consumers and drove volumes through Xiaomi's retail location known as the Mi Home. (source: IDC)

Smartphone shipments reach second highest level for a single quarter as worldwide volumes reach 355.2 million in the 3rd Quarter, 2015, according to IDC
Contrary to what media coverage might suggest, the smartphone market is about much more than just Apple and Samsung. While these two companies are market leaders, their combined market share amounted to no more than 37.3 percent in the most recent quarter. Despite Apple (and to a lesser degree Samsung) stealing the headlines, the fact is that the smartphone market is not (and hasn’t been for some time) a two-horse race. According to IDC, other smartphone vendors, led by Chinese powerhouses Huawei (26.5 million), Lenovo (18.8 million including Motorola) and Xiaomi (18.3 million), shipped a combined total of more than 220 million smartphones in the past three months, as demand for low to mid-range handsets in emerging markets continued to surge. In Q3 2015, Samsung shipped 84.5 million smartphones and Apple shipped 48 million smartphones, retaining, for now, their lead of the global market.
