French Voters Skeptical of Macron & Le Pen: Is France "Done"?

FRANCE 24 Live – International Breaking News & Top stories - 24/7 stream

Watch election coverage above as France votes Sunday, May 7, 2017, for a new President and neither of the two runoff candidates, Macron and Le Pen, are representing a major French party. What's likely to happen? Video courtesy of France24.com.

UPDATE May 7, 2017 (rev. May 8): Macron wins runoff with low voter turnout and historic high numbers of voters voting blank or spoiled ballots--out of France's reported 51 million registered voters, 25.4% of registered voters did not vote, 11.4% of registered voters voted a spoiled or blank ballot, and the remaining voters split between Macron 66% and Le Pen 34%--hence Macron won by getting only 20.75 million (updated) votes. Legislative elections in France are scheduled to take place on 3, 10-11 June 2017 and 17-18 June 2017 to elect the 577 members of the 15th National Assembly of the French Fifth Republic. See also: Many French voters yet to be convinced by Macron | Reuters.com 8 May 2017.

Analysis and opinion (as of May 5, 2017):

First, the situation in France may be a lot worse than many would have you believe--
Some media, including Reuters.com, have reported that French voters are skeptical and do not think either Macron or Le Pen have answers on either unemployment or security (terrorism). Reportedly 45 percent of voters believe neither Macron nor Le Pen would put an end to unemployment (unemployment has for years been close to 10 percent in France), and 36 percent of voters say neither candidate is able to protect France from terrorist attacks. France has been under a state of emergency since 2015 and more than 230 people have been killed in terrorist attacks over the past two years. Under this scenario, the runoff vote on Sunday is a "no-win election" for the French people.
Second, here's what's likely to happen: the peculiar Emmanuel Macron will win accompanied by pro-EU elites and establishment media cheering, mistakenly believing "populism is over." Then the rot will continue while Macron somehow tries to govern, though you won't notice much reporting on this if you are only following the establishment media "narratives."

Look at the infographic below (thousands of millionaires flee France). France has a problem. Is it because, like most of Europe, it is trapped in a failed experimental monetary system (the "euro"--monetary union without fiscal union does not work), apparently resigned to high unemployment, and overwhelmed by chaotic out-of-control immigration, and an inability to absorb or culturally integrate its own growing and dissatisfied Muslim minorities? Expect more trouble ahead. This is far from over. Get out if, and while, you can. The Brexiteers have got it right. More will be revealed. See: Euro Outlook for 2017 | Fortune.com"Markets sense that the system is not viable in the long run—speculators attack when they smell blood. European Central Bank President Mario Draghi’s assertion that he will do “whatever it takes” has worked wonders—for longer than anyone expected. But it is a confidence trick: It works only because market participants believe it will work."

Third, if you're doing a deal in Europe and your counterparts will not agree to U.S. law and jurisdiction governing the transaction, why would you not insist on English law and jurisdiction governing the transaction, and close it in London? Otherwise, you too could end up "trapped."

All of the above has ramifications for global markets and investors, and the shift in global power from West to East. Caveat Emptor.

Election Night 2016 Redux, Donald Trump's Triumph via Twitter

Just one month ago, Donald Trump shocked the elites and establishment media by winning the 2016 election to become the 45th President of the United States, garnering a total of 306 electoral votes (only 270 electoral votes are needed to win) to Hillary Clinton's 232 electoral votes:
"... Hillary and her Clinton campaign organization, and Clinton supporters, were in such shock and disbelief on election night. Hillary couldn't even emotionally handle showing up to concede at the Javits Center election night, but instead, sent John Podesta who told everybody to 'go home.'"--Why Hillary Lost | DomainMondo.com.
Email received in early December by the Editor of Domain Mondo from a Manhattanite who holds a senior position at a major Wall Street firm:
"Like many others, I was surprised by the results of the election.  I guess I was persuaded by the polls that indicated that Hillary Clinton would win ... She also had a significant advantage in the Electoral College [according to the pundits and pollsters' projections] ...  On election night, I attended two parties given by major donors to the Democratic Party.  When I arrived at each the mood was upbeat (one was black tie–preferred in anticipation of a celebratory occasion). By nine o’clock the crowd was becoming despondent and by eleven most had left.  I thought I would try to get some sleep around midnight and called a Washington contact whom I knew was staying up all night. I asked him to call me when the outcome was certain.  He didn't call, but sent me an email at 1:42am saying that Pennsylvania had gone for Donald Trump and it was over.  Pennsylvania!"
Twitter.com May Have Predicted the Election | technologyreview.com"The votes for Brexit and Donald Trump contradicted pollsters, but some researchers say Twitter was sending accurate signals all along ..."

New ICANN President and CEO Göran Marby of Sweden, Starts May 2016

But troubling reports indicate his temperament and leadership style are incompatible with ICANN's collaborative, multi-stakeholder approach to internet governance--

Göran Marby, new ICANN CEO (ICANN photo)
UPDATE: According to Wikipedia (English translation): Göran Marby - Wikipedia: "In June 2015 representatives of several telecom operators addressed extensive criticism of the way Göran Marby leads PTS, which meant that he drives authority in an unprofessional manner and autocratically. He reportedly has also acted inappropriately and threatening towards both employees and the representatives of the telecommunications industry and journalists." Reference: June 10, 2015: Sharp criticism of the Swedish Post and Telecom Agency's Director General - News (echo) | Sweden's Radio: " The Swedish telecommunications industry expressed a huge dissatisfaction with the Director General of Post and Telecom Agency, Goran Marby. Many believe that he runs authority in an unprofessional manner. The sources also say that Marby even acted menacingly in different situations... One case involves journalist Mats Sjödin , which monitors the telecommunications industry ...  'He came up to me and grabbed my shoulder, and said that "you can not ask me about my staff, because then I can be very aggressive. I can be really aggressive," and so he pushed me on the shoulder.'- I took great offense ... It was a direct threat, and that was additionally physical, says Mats Sjödin. The echo has for several weeks been trying to get an interview with Göran Marby, but he declined to respond to criticism and accusations. Yesterday, outside the Ministry of Industry, we met him briefly. But he answered with silence. After several minutes to respond to questions with silence he disappears behind the guard at the ministry... Bahnhof CEO Jon Karlung requires that the PTS Director General resigns and says that he has created a climate in which no one in the industry dares to criticize ..." (English translation)

What Domain Mondo Will Be Watching For in 2016

So much to choose from! Here are a few of the things Domain Mondo will be watching for in 2016:

ICANN CEO Fadi Chehade
ICANN CEO Fadi Chehade has announced his last day at ICANN will be March 12, 2016 (Icannphotos, Oct 17, 2012)
"I expect to add other roles to my portfolio" --Fadi Chehade, My Transition from ICANN
  1. Who will be the new President and CEO of ICANN? (And whoever it is, good luck!--You're going to need it!)
  2. Once current ICANN President and CEO Fadi Chehade is gone, whether March 12, 2016, or sooner, who will be more relievedSteve Crocker or Larry Strickling
  3. Will Fadi move to China and run the "Wuzhen Initiative" for the Communist Party and government of China? Or instead, will Fadi follow the footsteps of his former ICANN Chief Strategy Officer and become Executive Director of  his favorite ICANN stakeholder-lobbyist organization? Or, alternatively, will Fadi be offered a part-time job (to add to his portfolio--"it's payback time, baby!") by the only ICANN stakeholder-lobbyist organization which ICANN actually "got in bed with" (joined as a full member) during Fadi's tenure as President & CEO?
  4. Will NTIA and the Obama administration pull the plug on the IANA transition after Chehade's Wuzhen shenanigans, OR will Congress actually allow the IANA Transition to happen (assuming it gets that far), OR will Ted Cruz, Marco Rubio or the Real Donald TRUMP stop it dead in its tracks?
  5. Will both, or either, .WEB and .WEBS be delegated into the Internet Root in 2016?
  6. Will Google finally figure out it has no clue how to market domain names or run a registrar or registry, and should have never gotten into the domain names business?
  7. When will Alphabet realize its brand name and domain name [abc.xyz] are both lame?
  8. What will happen to Yahoo?
  9. Which new gTLD will be the first to Go Dark (and take down all its websites with it)?
  10. Which new gTLD registry operator will be the first to file bankruptcy or receivership?
  11. How will the U.S. government ensure that its trusted contractor, Verisign, continues as the Internet's Root Zone Maintainer?
  12. Will Verisign be indemnified by ICANN, and PTI, once Verisign no longer has the benefit of U.S. government contractor immunity as Root Zone Maintainer? In that case, if ICANN's new gTLDs expansion crashes the Internet, could Verisign end up owning ICANN and PTI and/or all their assets--deja vu Network Solutions circa 1995?
  13. When will the music stop for Neustar and $NSR shareholders in 2016?
  14. Which U.S. law firm will be the first to file a lawsuit (e.g., antitrust) against ICANN, or its subsidiary PTI, once ICANN no longer has U.S. government contractor immunity (tentative end date: September 30, 2016)? What new potential legal liabilities (pdf) will every gTLD registry operator have after ICANN is no longer a U.S. government contractor?
  15. What will be more popular with governments, network administrators, and consumers around the world at the end of 2016: ad blockers or TLD blockers?
  16. Will ICANN ever be accountable? OK, everyone already knows the answer to this one: No.
