E-commerce Tipping Point Is 20%, Digital Winners & Losers (video)

Scott Galloway: The Tipping Point is 20%

Video above re-published Mar 10, 2017 (see note* below), by L2inc.com: NYU Stern Marketing Professor Scott Galloway on this week's digital winners and losers:

*Reposted this week's episode as the previous version included data that was cited correctly, but learned was not accurate and has been retracted by the source.)

Once a sector hits 20% e-commerce penetration, the winners and losers start to emerge. We've seen it with books and toys, and apparel may be next.

Loser: Firms relying on Amazon Web Services (aws.amazon.com). The recent outage disrupted service for hundreds of thousands of sites.

Loser: Online travel agents, whose crowded layout paves the way for Google's Hotel Finder to change the game.

Loser: Connected toys. Amid growing evidence that "smart" playthings can be hacked, Scott demos his kids' newest toy.

Amazon Web Services (AWS) domainaws.amazon.com

Amazon Web Services (AWS), a subsidiary of Amazon.com, Inc., offers a suite of cloud-computing services that make up an on-demand computing platform. These services operate from 14 geographical regions across the world. AWS has announced another 4 Regions (and 11 Availability Zones) in Canada, China, India, and the United Kingdom coming online throughout 2017. Each Region is wholly contained within a single country and all of its data and services stay within the designated Region. Each Region has multiple "Availability Zones", which are distinct data centers providing AWS services. Availability Zones are isolated from each other to prevent outages from spreading between Zones. Several services operate across Availability Zones (e.g., S3, DynamoDB) while others can be configured to replicate across Zones to spread demand and avoid downtime from failures. As of December 2014, Amazon Web Services operated an estimated 1.4 Million servers across 28 availability zones. The global network of AWS Edge locations consists of 54 points of presence worldwide, including locations in the United States, Europe, Asia, Australia, and South America (source: Wikipedia.org).

Amazon Cloud, AWS, Bigger Than Its Four Main Competitors Combined?

Cloud Infrastructure Services Revenue Growth

Above: Q1 2015 data from Synergy Research Group indicated that Amazon Web Services (AWS) remained larger than its four main competitors combined in the cloud infrastructure service market. While Microsoft claimed the highest revenue growth rate and IBM claimed the private and hybrid services segment, AWS grew faster than the market as a whole and its market share increased up to 29% in Q1 2015. Google, while gaining market share, remained just half the size of Microsoft's Cloud market share. Salesforce, a leader in PaaS, rounded out the top five ranked Cloud companies, in Q1 2015. It will be interesting to compare Q1 2016 data, when it becomes available.

See also: The Big Four Cloud Providers are Leaving the Rest of the Market Behind (July 24, 2015)| Synergy Research Group: "New Q2 data from Synergy Research Group shows that in aggregate Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft, IBM and Google control well over half of the worldwide cloud infrastructure service market. Their combined market share rose to 54% in the latest quarter compared with 46% in Q2 2014 and 41% in Q2 2013."
