55 Facts You May Not Know About Google $GOOG $GOOGL (infographic)

 $GOOG

$GOOG shares have increased in value 1436.65%, Aug 20, 2004 - Feb 23, 2016 (see above). The first funding for Google (principal domain: google.com) was in August 1998, $100,000 from Andy Bechtolsheim, co-founder of Sun Microsystems, before Google was even incorporated. 3 other angel investors also invested in 1998: Amazon.com founder Jeff Bezos, Stanford University computer science professor David Cheriton, and entrepreneur Ram Shriram. Early in 1999, founders Sergey Brin and Larry Page decided they wanted to sell Google to Excite (excite.com). They went to Excite CEO George Bell and offered to sell it to him for $1 million but he rejected the offer. Vinod Khosla, one of Excite's venture capitalists, talked Page and Brin down to $750,000, but Bell still rejected it. A $25 million round of funding was announced on June 7, 1999, major investors included venture capital firms Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers and Sequoia Capital. Google's initial public offering (IPO) was August 19, 2004, at which time Larry Page, Sergey Brin, and Eric Schmidt agreed to work together at Google for 20 years, until the year 2024. At the IPO, the company offered 19,605,052 shares at a price of $85 per share. The sale of $1.67 billion in IPO shares gave Google a total market capitalization of more than $23 billion. Today Google (through its holding company, Alphabet Inc.) is approaching a total market cap of $600 billion.

Salesforce, Google, and Disney, among others, are now reportedly interested in Twitter, the social networking service.  In the short-term, this has been good for Twitter's share price, rising 19% Thursday to Friday last week, and over 28% since August 29th (see chart below). But Twitter is still not flying high. The current price is below the IPO closing day price ($44.90), November 7, 2013, and considerably below the high of $73.31 in December 2013. Since then, the company's market cap has been slashed by billions of dollars. With its current valuation, quarterly "numbers" consistently in the red, and user growth stalling, the potential buyers need to come with deep pockets and solid plans. The Apple MISS Is BIG: iPhone Shipments, Revenue Forecast (video)

UPDATE (July 23, 2015): US Senator Al Franken has written the US Attorney General Loretta Lynch and FTC Chairwoman Edith Ramirez asking for a Justice Department and FTC investigation into whether Apple is engaging in anticompetitive behavior in the music streaming market--letter here (pdf).

Apple’s iPhone shipments for the fiscal third quarter and the company’s revenue forecast for the current period missed analysts’ projections, raising questions over whether demand for the device has peaked. Technalysis Research Founder and Chief Analyst Bob O'Donnell, Creative Strategies Principal Analyst Ben Bajarin and Bloomberg's Mike Regan speak on "Bloomberg West" in the video above, on July 21, 2015.

Not a good day (July 21, 2015) for Apple--both Apple iPhone shipments and the revenue forecast for 3Q 2015 missed estimates and the stock took a tumble in after-hours trading, which if it holds when regular trading resumes Tuesday, July 22nd, could result in the second largest one-day loss of market capitalization in the world's largest company, Apple, as measured by total stock market capitalization. NASDAQ:AAPL.

While Apple sold 47.5 million iPhones, a 35 percent gain, in the period that ended in June, the analysts had anticipated 48.8 million shipments, and Apple is expected to exceed estimates. To add insult to injury, Apple forecast revenue of $49 billion to $51 billion in its fiscal fourth quarter, which ends in September, short of the average estimate for $51.1 billion, according to Bloomberg: "Any indication of slowing demand for iPhones could spark concern that Apple is going to have a hard time selling more smartphones in the final months of the year."
