WHOIS (pronounced as the phrase who is) is a query and response protocol that is widely used for querying databases that store the registered users or assignees of an Internet resource, such as a domain name, an IP address block, or an autonomous system, but is also used for a wider range of other information. The protocol stores and delivers database content in a human-readable format. The WHOIS protocol is documented in RFC 3912. (Wikipedia)

ICANN 52 | Singapore WHOIS Session  -- 9 February 2015 from 14:00-15:15 SGT at ICANN52 | Singapore -- Brief overview of the WHOIS program and the WHOIS Roadmap, highlighting interdependencies among the different projects and opportunities for Community input. The session included panel discussions on current WHOIS issues, such as exploring possible identity validation checks as part of the future design of the WHOIS Accuracy Reporting System, the effectiveness of the 2013 Registrar's Accreditation Agreement WHOIS accuracy specifications, and the next steps for evaluating the EWG's proposal for a next generation registration directory service to replace the current WHOIS. The session concluded with an open Q&A session.
