- Apple wobbly? "I thought one of the big four (Apple, Google, Facebook, Amazon) would falter in 2016. All produced positive stock performance in 2016. None appear to have faltered in a huge way in 2016. But Apple certainly seems wobbly. They can’t make laptops that anyone wants to use anymore. It’s no longer a certainty that everyone is going to get a new iPhone when the new one ships. The iPad is a declining product. The watch is a mainstream flop. And Microsoft is making better computers than Apple (and maybe operating systems too) these days. You can’t make that kind of critique of Google, Amazon, or Facebook, who all had great years in my book."--Fred Wilson, What Did And Did Not Happen In 2016 | AVC.com.

Growing Brands: Healthy Lifestyle, Digital Ecosystems, Social Platforms
Digital IQ Index® - Food 2016:
2016 has been a bad year for sugary foods—packaged food sales in the US have registered slow growth as healthier alternatives usurp share.
The fastest growing Index brands are snacks positioned around a healthy lifestyle.
As these health-oriented upstarts gain share, legacy brands look to mergers and acquisitions to grow earnings in a static market.
Meanwhile, digital efforts can differentiate brands looking for growth, online or in-store.
While only two percent of the $675 billion in U.S. grocery sales occurred online in 2015, e-commerce is enjoying rapid growth across grocery categories—thanks in part to visibility on retailer sites.
99 percent of brands are present on at least one of the sixteen major grocers profiled in this year’s study, and 12 percent of brands have signed up for the Amazon Dash button since introduction last spring.
Brands have increasingly invested in digital ecosystems with rich recipe content shared across social platforms, increasing brand awareness and easing the path to purchase.
Lastly, adoption of mobile tools and emerging platforms are reaching scale—94% of brands have mobile optimized sites, up from 82% in 2015, and 82% of brands are now present on Instagram, up from 61% in 2015.
Kraft (domains: kraft.com / kraftheinzcompany.com / kraftrecipes.com) rises to the number one spot in this year's Digital IQ Index: Food, boasting a recipe site with shopping list functionality and local offers on subsidiary brands' products, strong visibility across brand and category searches, and aggressive advertising on mobile, desktop and video platforms.
The study attempts to quantify the digital competence of 126 Food brands operating in US market. Members can download the full report at L2inc.com. Video above published September 19, 2016.

Smartphone Sales Fall in China, Market Saturated, India Booming
UPDATE August 21, 2015: But Smartphone Sales in India are booming! -- India's Smartphone Market Soars in the Second Quarter of 2015 Says IDC: "While both China and India offer a huge consumer base, there are few differences between the two markets including:
- In the latest quarter, almost one-fifth of the smartphones sold in China were sub-US$100, while in India almost 50% of all smartphones shipped during the same period were in this price segment;
- Apple has 19 Apple Stores in China at present, whereas India doesn’t have an Apple Store;
- The high-end Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge had a small contribution to the total Samsung smartphone sales in India, but a considerably larger contribution in China;
- Unlike China, we don’t expect the Indian consumer to make a quick switch to the smartphone, and vendors should keep in mind that they are here for the long haul.
- IDC expects India to maintain a double-digit growth rate in the smartphone market over the next few years as people switch to smartphones and gradually upgrade to 4G smartphones as well.
- By 2017, we expect India to overtake the United States as the second largest smartphone market globally."

| Gartner chart: Worldwide Smartphone Sales 2Q2015 by OS |
- Worldwide Smartphone Sales Recorded Slowest Growth Rate Since 2013
- Smartphone Sales Declined for the First Time in China
- Android's Year-Over-Year Growth Rate at its Lowest
"Gartner, Inc. said worldwide smartphone sales recorded the slowest growth rate since 2013 in the second quarter of 2015. Worldwide sales of smartphones to end users totaled 330 million units, an increase of 13.5 percent over the same period in 2014 (see Table 1). "While demand for lower-cost 3G and 4G smartphones continued to drive growth in emerging markets, overall smartphone sales remained mixed region by region in the second quarter of 2015," said Anshul Gupta, research director at Gartner. Emerging Asia/Pacific (excluding China), Eastern Europe and Middle East and Africa were the fastest-growing regions, driven by good performance from Chinese and local vendors.
"By contrast, smartphone sales in China fell for the first time year over year, recording a 4 percent decline. "China is the biggest country for smartphone sales, representing 30 percent of total sales of smartphones in the second quarter of 2015. Its poor performance negatively affected the performance of the mobile phone market in the second quarter," said Mr. Gupta. "China has reached saturation — its phone market is essentially driven by replacement, with fewer first-time buyers. Beyond the lower-end phone segment, the appeal of premium smartphones will be key for vendors to attract upgrades and to maintain or grow their market share in China." Despite the launch of new S6 models, Samsung's premium phones continued to be challenged by Apple's large-screen iPhones. Samsung lost 4.3 percentage points in market share and declined 5.3 percent in unit sales in the second quarter of 2015. Huawei recorded the highest sales growth rate of 46.3 percent, thanks to strong overseas sales and 4G smartphone sales in China. iPhone sales increased 36 percent, which helped Apple gain 2.4 percentage points in market share..."

The Three Tiers of Top-Level Domains (TLDs)
So thanks to ICANN and its new gTLDs program, we now have three tiers of Domain Names (TLD domain name extensions) in the domain name ecosystem:
First Tier Top-Level Domain Names: .COM domain names
Second Tier Top-Level Domains: .NET, .ORG, ccTLDs and other open, unrestricted gTLDs
Third Tier Top-Level Domains: everything that's left--restricted, branded, closed, etc.--TLDs
A check with RegistrarStats and a review of Domain Name Sales reports confirms the above--you can't argue with the market consensus as to valuations and sales!
And so, unfortunately, we have to endure for several months more, the now boring, mundane release of countless additional new gTLDs still to come (yawn), second tier and third tier. Here's an example of a new third tier TLD:
The 'Land Rush' Has Begun: Register Your .nyc Domain | Gale A. Brewer - Manhattan Borough President: "... All registrants are required to have a physical street address in New York City (with no P.O. boxes permitted)... By October 7, if nobody else has requested the same address, it's yours. If there are multiple requests for the same address, an auction will be held to determine who will own it. A successful domain name registered during Land rush will cost $30 plus $20 for each year it registers the name... We don't want the .nyc portal to become a corporate playground; it should enable local organizations and businesses to have a presence online. The bodega, the corner pizza place, the 24-hour locksmith, the family-run shoe repair service -- that's what this is about..." --great, every corner pizza joint in New York City needs its own .nyc domain name (even if it costs more than double what you would pay to register a dot COM domain name)--such a deal!
