Tech Review | How Amazon $AMZN Could Disrupt Health Care (video)

graphic "Tech Review" ©2017 DomainMondo.com
Tech Review (TR 2019-04-20)--Domain Mondo's weekly review of tech investing news: Features • 1) How Amazon $AMZN Could Disrupt Health Care, 2) Why Food-Delivery Apps Could Leave Restaurants Footing the Bill, 3) Investing: The Week & Investor Notes, 4) ICYMI Tech News: Qualcomm, Apple, Intel, Pinterest, Zoom, Uber, Amazon, Microsoft.

1) How Amazon $AMZN Could Disrupt Health Care

"Amazon has been described has the “everything store, ” but it’s missing one major category - prescription medicines. That might soon change, in the wake of Amazon’s roughly $1 billion acquisition of PillPack, an internet pharmacy. Health experts told CNBC that it’s only a mater of time before Amazon starts selling prescription drugs on its online marketplace, and that it’s assembling a team to do just that. For Amazon, pharmacy represents a multibillion market opportunity, but it’s also highly complicated and will involve battling with some entrenched competition that has a vested interest in keeping drug prices high. But Amazon, with its scale, leverage, and supply chain expertise, could be the company to do it, the experts said. People buying medical supplies on Amazon, such as glucometers and cold medicine, can now use their flexible savings accounts or health savings accounts to get discounts. These programs, often referred to as an HSA or FSA, allow people with health insurance to set aside a portion of their salary before taxes to cover medical expenses that would have been paid for out-of-pocket, such as prescription medicines and medical supplies.

"In recent years, Amazon has started adding more health and wellness products, including medical devices and over-the-counter medicines. Amazon’s rival Walmart, which currently offers pharmacy services, also has a storefront for HSA and FSA products. To sell prescription medicines, Amazon will need to work with middlemen, known as pharmacy benefits managers, in order to take a customer’s insurance. Some health experts suggest that the move into adding HSA and FSA cards is a smart method for Amazon to learn more about people’s spending on health. “It’s a back end way for Amazon to learn about consumer purchasing behavior of health care products and services, as it moves more deeply into the space,” said Michael Yang, a health-tech investor with Omers Ventures.

"Some in the pharmacy world have speculated that Amazon will get into the space by initially focusing this segment of consumers that typically pays cash for their prescription medicine. That’s about 6 percent of the U.S. population, which is a chunk of the $450 billion pharmacy market."--CNBC.com video above published Apr 10, 2019.

Smartphone Apps Are Now 50% of All US Digital Media Time Spent

Smartphone apps now account for more than half of all Americans’ time spent online, according to comScore Media Metrix® Multi-Platform and comScore Mobile Metrix®. The smartphone app has been the most important access vehicle to the internet for some time, is now growing its share to a point where it now eclipses all other digital media platforms combined.--Smartphone Apps Are Now 50% of All U.S. Digital Media Time Spent | comScore.com

But Consumers Spend Most Of Their Time In Just A Few Apps according to Forrester.com. While US consumers spend most of their time on smartphones using apps, just five apps account for nearly 90% of the time they spend using apps. Although US smartphone owners use about 24 unique apps in a given month, the remaining 19 command just a small slice of users’ time. For this reason, Forrester has advised businesses to design their apps for their best and most loyal or frequent customers because those are the only one who will bother to download and use the app regularly. Most retailers report their mobile web sales outweigh their app sales, and outside of the larger players like Google and Facebook, customers will use mobile websites instead of a business’ native app.

That means millions of Android apps on your Chromebook, which is going to change Chromebooks completely. Touchscreens will be more important; new sensors and processors will probably be integrated."

Android Apps on Chromebook:

Video above: Lisa Gade of MobileTechReview demonstrates Android apps and the Google Play Store running on the Acer Chromebook R11, one of three Chromebook models that currently support Android apps on Chrome OS (the Asus Chromebook Flip an the Pixel are the other two--see list below for more models to be supported later in 2016-17--Google will add this milestone feature to a host of Chromebooks later in 2016 and in 2017. If you own one of the three supported models, you can enable developer builds in your Chromebook’s settings to try it yourself. Tested: Evernote, Mission Impossible, Microsoft Word, Asphalt 8, note taking apps and more from the Play Store. Also compared are the web vs. Android app version of some apps like MS Word (hint, the web version is often better suited to a laptop style device).

The Acer Chromebook R11 is an 11.6” Chrome OS laptop with a very pleasing 1366 x 768 IPS touch screen, 360 degree hinge, 4 gigs of RAM, a quad core Intel Celeron processor and an ample selection of ports. It sells for around $300. Video published on Jul 26, 2016. Domain Mondo also recommends looking at Acer Chromebook 15 (with 4 GB Ram) which is one of the models to be enabled for Android apps (see list below).

Facebook At War With Ad Blockers and Ad Blocking

After announcing it will force the delivery of ads to people who use ad blockers, Facebook is battling it out with at least one company that has already found a way around its anti-ad blocking effort. WSJ.com's Lee Hawkins explains. Originally published August 12, 2016.

The Digital News Report 2016, published by the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism, found at least one in five online consumers uses ad-blocking software across most major markets. Statista (see infographic below) reports the ad-blocking trend is here to stay: "usage of ad-blocking tools is by far the most prevalent among young consumers, indicating that the proportion of people blocking ads from their online experience will likely rise in the future."  Chart below shows how many people use ad-blocking software in selected countries:
