How Amazon Changed Twitch Live Streaming (video)

How Amazon Changed Twitch Live Streaming

Websites such as Twitch.com, YouTube.com, and Microsoft's Mixer.com are capitalizing on livestreaming by integrating another form of popular media: video games. Twitch is now leading the competition when it comes to livestreaming gaming and esports. Livestreaming has become one of the most popular forms of online entertainment today.

According to Newzoo, the video game industry raked in an estimated $138 billion in 2018. When Twitch launched back in 2011, the company focused on esports and gaming. During the site's launch, Twitch had close to 3.2 million unique visitors per month. In 2012, the site grew to 20 million visitors per month, and by 2014, tech giants Amazon $AMZN and Google both tried to acquire the site.

Today, it's one of the biggest platforms for streamers such as Tyler "Ninja" Blevins. The site has over 3 million monthly streamers on the platform. Watch this video to find out more about the history of Twitch.

Startup What3Words Global Geocoding System of 3 Square Metres

An Address for Every Place on Earth

Freethink.com video above published Dec 28, 2018: "We take addresses for granted - but billions of people and places don’t have them, and it’s a big problem. Whether it’s voting, disaster relief, or pinpointing a spot on festival grounds, not having an address makes things that should be simple difficult. Enter Chris Sheldrick, who coordinated events in the music industry where he was frustrated by address-related problems. He created What3Words, a method of dividing the entire world into 3 meter-by-3 meter squares using a set of three common words as addresses. It’s being used everywhere from Mongolia to South Africa for everything from emergency services to pizza delivery. In this interview, Chris Sheldrick describes the problem, how he came up with the idea, and how you can find ways to change the world on your own."
what3words is the simplest way to talk about location. It has divided the world into a grid of 3m x 3m squares, each with a unique address made from 3 words. Now people can refer to any precise location – a delivery entrance, a picnic spot or a drone landing point – using three simple words. what3words is helping improve businesses around the world, and paving the way for social and economic progress in developing nations. It can be used via the free mobile app or online map. what3words can also be built into any other app, platform or website, with just a few lines of code.--what3words.com

Many places lack a system for addresses. What3Words’ solution is to give every spot a three-word designation. Featured in the Sept. 3, 2018 issue of Bloomberg Businessweek.

How Fintech Startup Robinhood Makes Money (video)

How Robinhood Makes Money

Robinhood is an investing app valued at over $5 billion, that says it's trying to "democratize America's financial system" by making investing accessible to the little guy with free trades--Invest for Free--"Invest in stocks, ETFs, options, and cryptocurrencies, all commission-free, right from your phone or desktop." It's an eye-popping valuation for a financial company with opaque metrics and plenty of competition. The young company had its share of missteps as well, prompting questions of whether or not it can handle primetime. Robinhood has faced criticism for business practices that allow it to offer free trading. It also botched the rollout of a checking and savings account feature in late 2018, garnering concern from regulators. But the company's incredible growth and popularity with younger investors – more than 6 million users by the end of 2018 – means it could be a major player in banking moving forward. CNBC video above published Jan 16, 2019.

  • The ICANN Board of Directors' resolution, available here, was unanimously adopted, and may be reaffirmed every 90 days for no more than one year.
Cherine Chalaby, ICANN Board Chair said: "While there are elements remaining to be finalized, the adoption of this Temporary Specification sets us on the right path to maintaining WHOIS in the public interest, while complying with GDPR before its 25 May enforcement deadline."

To ensure compliance with the GDPR, access to personal data will be restricted to layered/tiered access, where only users with a legitimate purpose can request access to non-public data through registrars and registry operators. Until a unified access model is in place, registries and registrars will have to determine which requests are permissible under the law. Alternatively, users may contact either the registrant or listed administrative and technical contacts through an anonymized email or web form available via the registered name's registrar. Registrants may opt to have their full contact information made publicly available. (source: ICANN.org)

ICANN's GDPR Train Wreck: How Many Days Until May 25?

With the May 25th GDPR deadline looming, has ICANN moved from its previous delusional fantasy world to confronting the harsh reality that ICANN is nowhere ready to comply with the European Union's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) by May 25, less than two weeks away, or is ICANN still lost in La-La Land? ICANN leadership and management essentially wasted most of the last two years instead of properly preparing for the GDPR:
See: UPDATE May 10, 2018: ICANN CEO's Desperate 6-page Letter to WP29 Chair.
"A day late and a dollar short," ICANN is now grasping for straws--see May 5, 2018 Letter from ICANN Board Chairman Cherine Chalaby (pdf), to the Government Advisory Committee (GAC) Chair Manal Ismail re: "ICANN Board Board comment on GAC Advice regarding GDPR" excerpt below:
"... The Board’s current thinking and approach on the proposed Interim Model (May 25) is inconsistent or could be viewed as inconsistent with certain items of the GAC’s advice, and as a result the Board would find great benefit in having an exchange with the GAC on these matters ...  the Board proposes to discuss these matters via a conference call with the GAC during the week of 7-13 May 2018. The Board acknowledges the short notice of this request but given the fast-approaching effective date of the GDPR [May 25] realizes the need to move as quickly as possible to address the GAC advice prior to the Board taking action on an Interim Model (May 25) ..." (emphasis added)
The results from the ICANN Board's confab with the GAC? "... the Board has made a preliminary determination that its current approach on the proposed Interim Model (May 25), to be implemented in a Temporary Specification, is inconsistent or could be viewed as inconsistent with certain items of GAC advice."--11 May 2018 Letter from Cherine Chalaby to Manal Ismail (pdf).

e. Adobe Connect Update | ICANN.org: "Based on your overwhelming sentiment, over 75% of you asked in one way or another for Adobe Connect, we are carefully moving ahead with attempting to restore Adobe Connect"--Editor's note: my input via email to ICANN April 20, 2018 (cc EU antitrust & WP29, David Redl (NTIA), ICANN CEO, Board Chair & Ombudsman):
"This is a "no-brainer"--restore the Adobe Connect ASAP (until you find a better or equal solution for less cost)--Adobe Connect should have NEVER been taken offline, particularly in the middle of ICANN61, as you report the only known exploit of the vulnerability was by the same "researcher" who "discovered" and reported the vulnerability. By that same logic, the entire DNS, with all of its KNOWN and UNKNOWN vulnerabilities, including the Public WHOIS, should be taken offline immediately. But since ICANN org has no respect nor regard for the vast majority of the world's domain name registrants, we all know where ICANN org stands on that issue. As members of the global internet community, none of us have a choice, we are continuously assaulted and burdened by the poor decisions made by overpaid and incompetent ICANN org management and the dysfunctional, self-selected "ICANN community" dominated by "special interests"--trademark lawyers, corporate lobbyists, and contracted parties--registrars and registry operators. Maybe the European Union can help us with the "privatized" ICANN global monopoly, since the U.S. government abandoned its "stewardship" role in 2016."

"... At the end of March we anticipate having our next interaction with Article 29 representatives since sending them the proposed model. This next stage is critical to determine what appears in the public WHOIS, including what is collected, escrowed and transferred from registrants to registrars and registries. There are open questions about several elements in the Proposed Interim Model and it's important we determine what are the best ways to answer those in a final model. In presenting our plan of action, we want to ensure that access is not lost if an accreditation model is not implemented in time for the GDPR's 25 May 2018 enforcement deadline. We will also highlight again, the importance of additional time to implement our solution. We are very aware of the need for additional time beyond May 2018 to implement a compliance model by which accredited users with a legitimate purpose may gain access to non-public WHOIS data. Feedback may also allow further refinement of the accreditation model. We will share any information that we gain from our next meeting with you by posting it to our Data Protection/Privacy Issues correspondence page ..." (emphasis and link added)--see also:
Note also comments at this week's WSIS Forum 2018: ICANN, Data Protection and the GDPR | GIP Digital Watch | dig.watch: "Mr William J. Drake, international fellow and lecturer at the Department of Communication and Media Research at the University of Zurich, reminded the audience that the first function of the WHOIS service was a narrow technical one, namely, to identify the parties to be reached out to in order to ensure stability of the infrastructure and continuity of the operation. He said that other uses were not part of the discussion in the original bottom-up definition process. He added that current uses of the service cannot be confused with its purpose, mainly now that human rights are in ICANN's bylaws. He called for more involvement from privacy and data protection stakeholders, so that ICANN does not end up running a repository to be used by third parties, out of its scope and mandate.

"Mr Paul Mitchell, senior director of technology policy at Microsoft, said that the GDPR is more closely attached to the European authorities and people, but it impacts all over the world. He highlighted that Microsoft does not see a contradiction between full compliance with the GDPR and legitimate access to WHOIS, which is an important tool to make sure the system is safe. Mitchell concluded by saying that the development of the tiered access model was highly unlikely to be an operational solution with the involvement of stakeholders such as the Governmental Advisory Committee (GAC), Article19 working party, and data protection authorities, however critical and complex that model might be on the way to a permanent solution." Over a billion people celebrated the Chinese New Year. Many prepared for the celebrations for days and a key aspect of the holiday involved people cleaning their homes, a tradition called "sweeping the dust" which symbolized the removal of misfortune and the welcoming of something new. When all of the cleaning was completed, homes were decorated with posters and red lanterns before revellers enjoyed spectacular fireworks and firecrackers. Technology played an increasingly important role in the world's biggest party with red envelopes or hóngbāo central to the festivities.

In China and other Southeast Asian societies, a red envelope is a monetary gift exchanged during holidays or special occasions. Over the past couple of the years, the tradition has gone digital with Tencent (domain: tencent.com) and Alibaba (domains: alibaba.com and alibabagroup.com) both offering virtual red envelopes. The digital version has caught on and last year, the number exchanged on Tencent's WeChat (domain: wechat.com) app was an impressive 46.6 billion = 33 envelopes full of cash for every person in China. That's a huge increase on 2016 when the red envelope count came to 8 billion.
