Peter Chernin On The Future of Digital Entertainment (video)

Peter Chernin: The Future of Digital Entertainment

In an episode of Talks at GS, filmed at Goldman Sachs’ Builders + Innovators Summit, media executive Peter Chernin discussed the evolution of digital entertainment and how the business continues to adapt for a changing consumer. Goldman Sachs (goldmansachs.com) video above published Nov 9, 2018 (via YouTube.com).

Competition for Consumers: “I’m a big believer in try[ing] to think about where consumers are being underserved.… I think there’s one huge chokepoint in the whole thing right now, which is curation, recommendation. I think there is so much stuff out there and I think consumers are wildly underserved…. It’s not money that’s the scarce commodity in that sense, because Netflix is a great bargain. It’s time. It’s how do you figure out what is worth my two hours tonight?”

Brand identity in a digital world: “Branding is certainly enormously important.  I think that… the really interesting challenge from… a digital perspective right now is the balance between customer acquisition, marketing dollars and brand marketing dollars. In general, I think most certainly nascent digital brands are better off spending most of their money on customer acquisition marketing…. So, the brand is hugely important, but I’m not sure I would be marketing it.”

5G Mobile Networks, A Deep Dive Into The Future

Who will get 5G networks deployed first? U.S., China, and South Korea are leading, depending on the factors one measures: launch, coverage, etc. The U.S. will have some 5G smartphone service next year with a few commercial launches for mobile broadband this year. China is investing much more in 5G and will likely be the first nation with broadly deployed 5G networks. See also The hot race for 5G will change the world we know now | TheHill.com.

Billionaire Peter Thiel: Innovation, Bitcoin and Politics (2018)

Interview Date:15 March 2018
Event: The Economic Club of New York

An interview with billionaire venture capitalist and co-founder Valar Ventures, Peter Thiel. In this interview with Maria Bartiromo, Thiel discusses how to create innovation and what future innovation he would invest in. He also talks about Bitcoin, privacy, trade and tariffs, and why he supports President Trump.

On privacy (starts at 30:00):
Question: I want to ask you your thoughts on privacy at a time when these technology companies are so successful, more successful and more powerful than they ever have been in terms of having so much information on all of us, you backed Hulk Hogan's successful triumph over Gawker Media and that sex tape that they resulted in a 140 million dollar judgment against Gawker forcing the media company into bankruptcy. You're a libertarian, I want to get your take on how you see the privacy issues versus this powerful position so many of these technology companies are in. I'm leaning to a question about regulation but first why was this Gawker situation so important to you?
Answer: "Well I think that I'm very proud of having supported Hulk Hogan in his in his a successful lawsuit, you know this sort of egregious [conduct], the claim that you know a pornographer pays people for sex tapes and a journalist is someone who gets to publish sex tapes without paying people that's simply an insult to journalists and that's what that is what Gawker was in effect arguing. You know there is a First Amendment we believe in, free speech, but that doesn't mean that you get to steal a sex tape made in the privacy of a bedroom and post it on the internet for everybody to see and ... of course we have a Fourth Amendment which protects you against unreasonable search and seizure not just by the government but certainly also by by private actors ... I'd seen them [Gawker] you know bully and mistreat people for you know for a long time and I thought it was going to continue ... this ongoing tortious behavior was simply going to continue and someone needed to to try to say stop ...

"This question about privacy in the digital era is something that deserves to be rethought a lot and it's not a matter of technological determinism. We often like to tell these technologically determinist stories where if you are pro privacy you are a Luddite and that privacy is an old-fashioned concept, it went out the window and it's no longer possible in the technological world.

"I don't think that's true. I think it is not always just a technological question. It's a legal question, it's a cultural, social, political question and I think that we're going to have a balance that will be, it will protect more privacy in the future. Now I do think that what Gawker did and what the big tech companies are doing is very different. I mean I think one very basic difference is if you voluntarily give the information, that's quite different from from it being sort of illegally obtained and sort of privacy violating way, but I think these things are always open to be rethought ... as a libertarian I always dislike regulation and worry the regulators will do whatever they will do in an even more ham-handed way and will make mistakes even greater than the companies ... but I would agree with you, that if they don't take these issues seriously, there is a risk they will be regulated whether that's a good thing or not. I think the threat is probably greater in Europe and again there's sort of good reasons and bad reasons. Good reasons are these privacy concerns. The bad reasons are that there are no successful [big] tech companies in Europe and they're jealous of the U.S. and ... they're punishing us, so it's sort of a combination of good and bad reasons but I think the tech industry needs to take this stuff [privacy] very seriously."

0:12  Chick-fil-A? Really?
0:13  Taco Cabana or Cinnabon - that's a real fast food chain.
0:17  Athleisure is still in.
0:19  41% of teens cite an athletic brand
0:21  as their favorite clothing label,

0:35  and if you're on meth.
0:40  A loser: Apple.
0:41  The most valuable company in the world
0:43  convinced 90 million Americans to buy iPhones
0:45  but it's struggling to get them to use those iPhones to pay for products.
0:49  Just a third of Americans with Apple Pay-enabled devices have tried the service

1:09  It's your fault, retailers.
1:11  Anyways, only five of the 100 brands in our Specialty Retail study
1:15  accept Apple Pay.
1:16  But the real reason the service hasn't taken off?
1:18  Consumers prefer credit cards.
1:21  A winner?
1:22  Road safety,
1:23  as ride-hailing apps prevent deaths from drunk driving.
1:25  After Uber launched in New York in 2011,
1:28  alcohol-related traffic accidents fell by 25 to 35%.
1:32  Every day 28 people in the US die in alcohol-related crashes,

1:40  Uber's arrival could be even more meaningful in South Africa
1:44  where almost two-thirds of road deaths are alcohol-related,
1:48  the highest proportion in the world.
1:49  The company grew faster during its first year in Johannesburg and Cape Town

China: Yuan, Markets, Economy--'Don't Worry, Everything Is Under Control'--

PIMCO's Crescenzi: No One Knows What China Will Do Next - PIMCO's Anthony Crescenzi discusses his outlook for China and market volatility. He spoke on "Bloomberg Markets" on January 15, 2016 (video above).

China: 'Everything Is Under Control' LOL
The yuan and the markets | The Economist: "... China is not normal. It is caught in a dangerous no-man’s-land between the market and state control. And the yuan is the prime example ... because a stronger [U.S.] dollar has been dragging up the yuan, the People’s Bank of China (PBOC) has tried to abandon its loose peg against the greenback since August; but it is still targeting a basket of currencies. A gradual loosening of capital controls means savers have plenty of ways to get their money out. A weakening economy, a quasi-fixed exchange rate and more porous capital controls are a volatile combination. Looser monetary policy would boost demand. But it would also weaken the currency; and that prospect is already prompting savers to shovel their money offshore. In the last six months of 2015 capital left China at an annualised rate of about $1 trillion. The persistent gap between the official value of the yuan and its price in offshore markets suggests investors expect the government to allow the currency to fall even further in [the] future ... The government has reacted by trying to rig markets. The PBOC has squeezed the fledgling offshore market in Hong Kong by buying up yuan so zealously that the overnight interest rate spiked on January 12th at 67%. Likewise, in the stockmarket it has instructed the “national team” of state funds to stick to the policy of buying and holding shares ..." (emphasis added, read more at the link above)

Late in 2014 President Xi Jinping went to Gutian, a small town in the south where, 85 years before, Mao had first laid down the doctrine that the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) is the armed force not of the government or the country but of the Communist Party. Mr Xi stressed the same law to the assembled brass: the PLA is still the party’s army; it must uphold its “revolutionary traditions” and maintain absolute loyalty to its political masters. His words were a prelude to sweeping reforms in the PLA that have unfolded in the past month, touching almost every military institution. The aim of these changes is twofold—to strengthen Mr Xi’s grip on the 2.3m-strong armed forces, which are embarrassingly corrupt at the highest level, and to make the PLA a more effective fighting force ..."
