Dave Jaggar & The History of ARM Microprocessors (video)

Dave Jaggar: "A History of ARM Microprocessor and it's Rise and Fall"

A "Talks at Google" video published Jun 20, 2019,: Dave Jaggar discusses his inspiring career that led to the ARM architecture which effectively powers the digital world, being the reason that your phone is small and doesn't burn a hole in your pocket. Moderator: Raymond Blum. Transcript (auto-generated, unedited).

In the late 1980’s Acorn, a British one-hit-wonder computer company, faced imminent extinction, with its only assets being 18 months of life support rations and perhaps the worst microprocessor ever designed. What they did right was to hire Dave Jaggar, with the ink still wet on his master's thesis.  Over eight years Dave systematically defined the entire ARM architecture, enabling  it to be a popular embedded controller for the digital revolution, with around 100 billion units shipped.  As ARM’s Head of Architecture Design, Dave authored the ARM Architectural Reference Manual and is the Founding Director of the ARM Austin Design Center. More on ARM architecture.

ARM Holdings is a British multinational semiconductor and software design company, owned by SoftBank Group and its Vision Fund. Processors based on designs licensed from ARM, or designed by licensees of one of the ARM instruction set architectures, are used in all classes of computing devices (including in space). ARM is viewed as the most important chip design infrastructure provider in the world as its microchips go into more than 90% of world’s mobile devices.

On June 22, 2019, SoftBank Group Corp. founder Masayoshi Son said he wants to  re-list ARM Holdings Plc as a publicly traded company within the next five years (the British chipmaker was acquired for $32 billion in 2016):
"I don’t know which market it will be, but ARM will be preparing for IPO within the next five years. Arm management is all excited about it. We are excited"--SoftBank’s founding Chairman and CEO Son, June 22, 2019.

This High-Tech Farmer Grows Kale in a Factory

In the kale-filled facility at vertical farm startup Bowery Farming, it’s a piece of proprietary software that makes most of the critical decisions -- like when to harvest and how much to water each plant. But it still takes humans to carry out many tasks around the farm. Katie Morich, 25, loves the work. But as roboticists make gains, will her employer need her forever? Bloomberg.com video published Sep 20, 2018.
At Bowery, we're committed to growing the purest produce possible. To us, that means using zero pesticides and non-GMO seeds. We distribute our greens locally and control the entire process from seed to store.

GDPR: What Is It and How Might It Affect You? (video and podcast)

GDPR: What Is It and How Might It Affect You?

Wall Street Journal (wsj.com) video above published May 21, 2018: The European Union's General Data Protection Regulation on data privacy will come into force on May 25, 2018. This video explains how it could affect you, even if you don't live in the EU.

a16z Podcast: What to Know about GDPR with Lisa Hawke and Steven Sinofsky

"Given concern around data breaches, the EU Parliament finally passed GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) after four years of preparation and debate; it goes into enforcement on May 25, 2018. Though it originated in Europe, GDPR is a form of long-arm jurisdiction that affects many U.S. companies -- including most software startups, because data collection and user privacy touch so much of what they do.

"With EU regulators focusing most on transparency, GDPR affects everything from user interface design to engineering to legal contracts and more. That's why it's really about "privacy by design", argues former environmental scientist and lawyer Lisa Hawke, who spent most of her career in regulatory compliance in the oil industry and is now Vice President of Security and Compliance at a16z portfolio company Everlaw.com (she also serves as Vice Chair for Women in Security and Privacy). And it's also why, observes a16z board partner Steven Sinofsky, everyone -- from founders to product managers to engineers and others -- should think about privacy and data regulations (like GDPR, HIPAA, etc.) as a culture... not just as "compliance".

"The two break down the basics all about GDPR in this episode of the a16z Podcast -- the why, the what, the how, the who -- including the easy things startups can immediately do, and on their own. In fact, GDPR may give startups an edge over bigger companies and open up opportunities, argue Hawke and Sinofsky; even with fewer resources, startups have more organizational flexibility, if they're willing to put in the work."--source Andreessen Horowitz

FT Lex on SoftBank’s purchase of ARM Holdings:

Masayoshi Son, SoftBank’s founder and chief executive, is betting that Arm is 43 per cent more valuable than the market thinks it is. FT.com's Robert Armstrong examines whether he's right or wrong.

UK's benchmark index FTSE100 is now UP 5.64% since the Brexit vote on June 23
On news of the SoftBank - ARM Holdings deal on Monday, July 18, 2016, the London Stock Exchange benchmark index FTSE100 rose, closing at 6,695.42, its highest level since August, 2015. ARM Holdings plc is a British multinational semiconductor and software design company (domain name: arm.com). Processors based on designs licensed from ARM, or designed by licensees of one of the ARM instruction set architectures, are used in all classes of computing devices such as microcontrollers in embedded systems (cars' ABS), smartTVs (Google TV), all modern smartwatches (such as Qualcomm Toq), as well as smartphones, tablets, laptops, desktops, servers and supercomputers/HPC.

Stock exchanges: symbols  LSE: ARM and NASDAQ: ARMH

Details of the deal:
  • ARM’s headquarters will remain in Cambridge, England, UK, as well as its senior management team, and SoftBank pledged to at least double employee headcount in the UK over the next five years. ARM currently employs about 4,000 people.
  • At £17 per share, the ARM acquisition is a 43% premium over last week's closing price.
  • Post-Brexit UK welcomes ARM purchase in test of strategy: "Just three weeks after the referendum decision, it shows that Britain has lost none of its allure to international investors,” Chancellor of the Exchequer Philip Hammond said. “Britain is open for business -- and open to foreign investment. SoftBank’s decision confirms that Britain remains one of the most attractive destinations globally for investors to create jobs and wealth.”--Bloomberg.com

IDC expects 2016 to be the Year of Platforms, Digital Transformation (video)

Leading Digital Transformation to Scale – IDC Futurescapes 2016 (video above):  "The "next chapter" of the 3rd Platform unfolds as we move from the foundation stage to mainstream adoption stage. With most organizations now utilizing third platform technologies to drive the digital transformation of their organization, the industry finds itself at an inflexion point – those organizations who can rapidly scale their digital transformation efforts by leveraging 3rd Platform technologies will be the thrivers in the digital economy."

IDC expects 2016 to be the Year of Platforms – IDC Asia Pacific held its fourth Asia/Pacific Telecom Summit titled “Connecting the Next Billion Users: An Opening Industry” at Singapore, 19-20 November 2015, sharing insights on the telecom industry’s shifting focus from CAPEX-driven infrastructure toward OPEX dominated software and services.

IDC dubbed 2014 as the year of continued infrastructure build to bring services closer to customers. 2015 was all about moving to 'Open’ in recognition of the shift towards Open Source technologies, Open Innovation, Open APIs driving new segments like IoT (Internet of Things) and towards the end of proprietary interfaces and better interoperability. The shift to ‘Open’ happened and Software-Defined Networks, Data Centers and Open Source were listed as the most sought technologies in the enterprise for 2015/16. 2016 is the year of the platform”, says Dustin Kehoe , Head of Telecom Practice, IDC Asia Pacific, a platform-based approach between telecoms and other competitors in their ability to link through storage, network and compute into an infrastructure that is software-defined. Platforms will extend even down to the data center infrastructure layer. Platforms will be able to resolve unaddressed areas of the market such as the general lack of orchestration to move workloads between networks and clouds.

Within the context of a Year of the Platform for 2016, some of the key IDC predictions include:
  • By 2017, over 65% IT organizations will implement Hybrid IT Environments that leverages in-house and external 3rd party assets housed in off-site data centers.
  • By 2016, 15% of Enterprises will have implemented a Software-Defined SD-WAN vendor solution or Cloud-based Managed Solution. This figure will jump to 60% by 2019.
  • By 2018, more than 70% of enterprises will access public cloud IaaS and SaaS capabilities via aggregation hubs operated by network or interconnect providers
  • Other predictions addressed opportunities in emerging market, cutting edge NFV capabilities, enabling technologies for Digital Transformation, the Mobile Enterprise and Customer First; for carriers.
“Software defined infrastructure and cloud orchestration will be the focus in 2016 and beyond."
