China Hacked & Stole, and U.S. Businesses Turned A Blind Eye

China's Hacking & Cybertheft
Current and former US officials and business execs describe hacking and IP theft by China and why they stayed silent because of the profits to be made in trade  —  Technology theft and other unfair business practices originating from China are costing the American economy more than $57 billion a year. Top government leaders told NPR that federal agencies are years behind where they could have been if Chinese cybertheft had been openly addressed earlier.
"Hackers from China, often with ties to the government, have been accused of breaking into gas companies, steel companies and chemical companies. Not long ago, Chinese government companies were indicted for stealing the secret chemical makeup of the color white from DuPont. China developed its J-20 fighter plane, a plane similar to Lockheed Martin's F-22 Raptor, shortly after a Chinese national was indicted for stealing technical data from Lockheed Martin, including the plans for the Raptor. Chinese hacking made occasional headlines, but none really grabbed Americans' attention. There was one exception. In 2010, Google went public in announcing that it had been hacked by the Chinese government. Thirty-four other American companies that were also part of the hack stayed silent. Most have kept it a secret to this day."
"Dmitri Alperovitch was one of the first to see it. He was working at a security firm in Atlanta during the Google hack. One afternoon, Google called, said they needed backup. Alperovitch is a well-known cyber sleuth. He says when he took a look, he was stunned.

DMITRI ALPEROVITCH: I knew pretty much right away that this is something very different. For the first time ever, we were facing a nation state, an intelligence service that was breaking into companies - not governments, not militaries, but private sector organizations.

SULLIVAN: Where was the U.S. government on all of this?

ALPEROVITCH: The U.S. government was nowhere to be seen.

SULLIVAN: Evan Medeiros was on staff at the National Security Council at the time and a top China specialist under President Obama. He says they didn't turn a blind eye. Obama signed an agreement with China to address the hacking. But he says the Obama administration also had other priorities - North Korea, Iran, the economy, climate change."

President Trump Fires FBI Director Comey, Markets Rally, Media Shocked!

Photo of the Charging Bull in New York City's Financial District by Sam valadi (CC BY 2.0)
UPDATE  May 15, 2017:  Trump's Bulls Charge, Bears Trapped!  The S&P 500 and the Nasdaq both closed at records Monday and the Dow industrials snapped a four-session losing streak to finish higher, the TRUMP Rally continues:
 NASDAQ Hits New All-Time High

Original post:
S&P 500 (5 day chart as of May 10, 2017)
Opinion and Analysis

Let’s look at the way US equity markets responded on Wednesday [May 10] to the Tuesday [May 9] news of President Trump firing FBI Director James Comey:
On Wednesday, the next day, the S&P 500 rallied 0.11% (see above chart), the NASDAQ was up 0.14%, and the CBOE VIX Index barely moved back over 10, to close at 10.2. In the words of one seasoned Wall Street analyst: "If you hadn’t read the headlines for 24 hours, you wouldn’t have known anything unusual had happened in Washington or anywhere else."
Conclusion: The media's 'Trump Derangement Syndrome'  so prevalent within the reality distortion field known as "Washington, D.C.," hasn't infected Wall Street (nor Main Street). Most Americans, thankfully, are immune and are either ignoring or laughing at the mainstream media circus which has now reached unprecedented proportions.

Bottomline: Comey should have been fired by Obama last year after the stunt Comey pulled in connection with the Clinton email investigation. The last thing the U.S. needs is another rogue FBI director like J. Edgar Hoover. Trump did the right thing in following the advice and recommendation (pdf) of the Deputy Attorney General and the Attorney General of the United States, respectively.

To the disbelief and dismay of the liberal media, the Dems and elitists, Trump owns this market and the Trump Bull Rally is still running on Wall Street:

UK Prime Minister Theresa May to meet with President Trump in Washington D.C., Friday Jan 27:

UK Prime Minister Theresa May will hold talks with US President Donald Trump in the White House this coming Friday (Jan. 27) on issues such as trade and security, with the UK Prime Minister being the first foreign leader to meet the US President since he took office. She told the BBC that the special relationship between the two countries enabled her to raise difficult matters.

Donald Trump: I’ll do a deal with the UK"Donald Trump will offer Britain a quick and “fair” trade deal with America within weeks of taking office to help make Brexit a “great thing”."--The Sunday Times | thetimes.co.uk Jan. 15, 2017.

Bannon and Kushner engineer UK meetings | Axios.com Jan. 21, 2017: "Donald Trump will take his first foreign leader meeting as President with British Prime Minister Theresa May ... A senior source tells Axios that Trump's chief strategist Steve Bannon played an important role in pushing the meeting to happen earlier than originally planned. Bannon has also been in contact with Boris Johnson, the British Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs and one of the chief cheerleaders of the Brexit movement. Jared Kushner was also very influential in the process, we are told ..."
"The US is already Britain's second-largest trading partner by country, after Germany. Trade between both countries is already more than 150 billion pounds ($186 billion), and the US is the single biggest source of inward investment to the UK, the [UK] embassy said."--CNN.com Jan. 22, 2017.

EU Populists See Trump Victory as Beginning of End for Old Order | Bloomberg.com"While a meeting of the populist right would once have been dismissed as a sideshow, Trump’s unexpected rise and the U.K.’s decision to leave the EU in last year’s referendum have focused investors’ concerns on the where the next threat to the European Union project might emerge. “The first major hit on the old order was Brexit,” Le Pen told a couple of hundred cheering supporters in Koblenz’s conference center. EU countries will soon “leave the prison of Europe,” she predicted, branding Merkel’s decision to let almost a million migrants into Germany last year “a catastrophe.” Trump himself has called the move “a catastrophic mistake.” Hammering on the key themes of her election campaign, Le Pen said every member of the euro area must have the possibility of leaving and that the shared currency [euro] is “destroying” the French economy."

If our partners refuse a renegotiation that gives American workers a fair deal, then the President will give notice of the United States’ intent to withdraw from NAFTA. In addition to rejecting and reworking failed trade deals, the United States will crack down on those nations that violate trade agreements and harm American workers in the process. And secondthe U.S. stock market had its best week since 2014! ... Thus two key observations can be made ... Firstno one really knows what events are going to transpire. And secondno one knows what the market’s reaction to those events will be. •  Putin apparently got in the last word on the Russian Dossier Hoax #FakeNews:

Video above published Jan 17, 2017 -- Russian President Vladimir Putin: ".... I am not acquainted with Mr. Trump, I have not met him, I do not know what he will do in the international arena so I have no reason either to attack him, criticise him for something or defend him ... But these false stories are utter nonsense ... When Trump came to Moscow a few years ago, he was not a politician and we did not know about his political ambitions. He was a businessman, one of the rich people in America. Does anyone really think that our security services chase every American billionaire? Of course not, it is complete nonsense ... Trump arrived [in Moscow] and immediately went to meet with the Moscow prostitutes? First, he is a grown man and secondly, he is a man who was engaged in the organisation of beauty contests and communicated with the most beautiful women in the world for many years. You know, I can hardly imagine that he ran into a hotel to meet with our girls with low social responsibility ... Prostitution is a serious, ugly social phenomenon because many women are involved in it as they have no other way to provide themselves. And it is pretty much the fault of the society and the state. But people who make-up such falsifications that are currently spread about the US President-elect, that are invented and used in the political struggle, those people are worse than prostitutes. They have no moral restraints."

News Review: ICANN Accountability WS2 & Consensus 'ICANN Style'

News Review | ©2016 DomainMondo.com
Domain Mondo's weekly review of internet domain news:

First Feature •  ICANN accountability workstream 2 (WS2) Dashboard--The ICANN Cross Community Working Group on Enhancing ICANN Accountability (CCWG-Accountability) Work Stream 2 (WS2) is "focused on addressing accountability topics for which a timeline for developing solutions and full implementation may extend beyond the IANA Stewardship Transition."--here's the latest WS2 subgroups progress update from ICANN:

CCWG-Accountability Workstream 2 Dashboard (pdf) (Dec 2016, updated 11 Jan 2017) embed:

Second Feature •  Consensus 'ICANN Style'
Decision-Making Methodologies:In developing its Proposal(s), work plan and any other reports, the CCWG-Accountability shall seek to act by consensus. Consensus calls should always make best efforts to involve all members (the CCWG-Accountability or sub-working group). The Chair(s) shall be responsible for designating each position as having one of the following designations:
a) Full Consensus - a position where no minority disagrees; identified by an absence of objection; b) Consensus – a position where a small minority disagrees, but most agree. In the absence of Full Consensus, the Chair(s) should allow for the submission of minority viewpoint(s) and these, along with the consensus view, shall be included in the report.
In a rare case, the chair(s) may decide that the use of a poll is reasonable to assess the level of support for a recommendation. However, care should be taken in using polls that they do not become votes, as there are often disagreements about the meanings of the poll questions or of the poll results.
Any member who disagrees with the consensus-level designation made by the Chair(s), or believes that his/her contributions are being systematically ignored or discounted should first discuss the circumstances with the relevant sub-group chair or the CCWG-Accountability co-chairs. In the event that the matter cannot be resolved satisfactorily, the group member should request an opportunity to discuss the situation with the Chairs of the chartering organizations or their designated representatives.
How does this play out in reality? Here's a snapshotJurisdiction Meeting #16 (10 January @ 13:00 UTC) chat transcript--"threaten me that we have consensus or nothing, and I will join the objectors"--

Note that the Jurisdiction subgroup is "behind schedule, but recovery is still possible" according to the subgroup progress update graphic at the top of this post.

Domain Mondo's weekly review of  macro economic and investing news:

MacroView Feature •  UK has the world’s top economy, defying the dire Brexit predictions of economists: "Britain [UK] ended last year as the strongest of the world’s advanced economies with growth accelerating in the six months after the Brexit vote, it was revealed yesterday (Jan. 5). Business activity hit a 17-month high last month, meaning that the economy grew by 2.2 per cent last year — more than the six other leading nations, including the US, Germany and Japan. Far from slowing after the referendum in June, as predicted by the Treasury and Bank of England, growth appeared to have improved ..."--theTimes.co.uk (emphasis added).
UK's London Stock Exchange benchmark index, the FTSE 100:

Since the Brexit referendum on June 23, 2016, the FTSE 100 has advanced 13.76%, closing Friday (Jan 6) at another new record high close of 7,210.05 (see chart above). See also: FTSE 100 recovers to reach another record close | BBC.com 6 Jan 2017: "The FTSE 100 edged up by 0.2%, or 14.74 points, to 7,210.05, a seventh consecutive record close ... Neil Wilson from ETX Capital pointed out that Friday's close means the index has risen for five consecutive weeks - the best performance since the Brexit vote in June."

UK economy defies Brexit predictions:

Markit's U.K. Manufacturing PMI rose to 56.1, from 53.6 in November, faring much better than many economists predicted in the aftermath of the vote to leave the EU. •   Obama's Legacy: For years, Obama insisted that Syria wasn't of great strategic importance to the United States. His miscalculation had massive repercussions, including upon Europe. Europe has struggled for years to assimilate Muslim arrivals from the Middle East and Africa, many of whom do not adhere to European cultural values. •   Election 2016 Redux: Donald J. Trump will be inaugurated U.S. President on Jan. 20th. Until then, we have sideshows in the media, courtesy of the Obama administration and other politicos:
John Harwood is an American journalist who is the chief Washington Correspondent for CNBC.com. He is also a contributor for The New York Times.

Mediagazer.com: "US intelligence report: Russia Today [a/k/a RT.com] played a key role in the Putin-ordered campaign to undermine the US election, collaborating with WikiLeaks." RT.com? Most Americans have never even heard of, much less watched or read RT.com, until now, so I went to the website and there is some interesting content there, particularly with the free "publicity" generated by the Obama administration and the U.S. government's "national 'intelligence' community." I recommend you read the following:
We all know mainstream media in the U.S. (NYTimes.com, WashingtonPost.com, ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN, et al ), were trying to help Hillary Clinton win the White House ("the downfall of the mainstream media in the presidential election, it was a self-satisfied echo chamber"--Lefsetz.com). The mainstream media narrative has changed from "Hillary will win the election, Trump has no path to 270 electoral votes" to Secret CIA assessment says Russia was trying to help Trump win White House | WashingtonPost.com. If you believe the Obama administration, and its "national 'intelligence' community," then you know who to thank for exposing the corruption and collusion of the Clintons, the Clinton campaign, DNC, and media: WikiLeaks and Russia. Apparently, if not for WikiLeaks.org and Russian hackers, we would have never known of the efforts of the Clinton campaign and DNC to "rig" the primary elections against Bernie Sanders, nor would we have known of the extent of corruption and collusion involving Bill and Hillary Clinton, the Clinton Foundation, DNC, media, and others, including foreign governments and other 'special interests' who paid the Clintons $200,000 to $800,000 per speech, and also funded the Clinton Foundation while Hillary was Secretary of State, as well as Hillary Clinton running her U.S. Secretary of State communications through a private "home brew" email server from which she destroyed 30,000+ emails so the public would never know the true extent of her nefarious activities, including the full extent of the Clintons' pay-to-play schemes.

Also remember, the "mainstream media," including the Washington Post and New York Times, published articles detailing the disclosures provided by and through WikiLeaks.org, and the authenticity of the hacked emails and other documents provided by WikiLeaks has also been supported in the course of the U.S. government investigation into the hacks. All governments, including the U.S. government, hack other governments, including political parties and politicians--see NSA tapped German Chancellery for decades | TheGuardian.com--there is nothing unusual here, except the exposure of corruption and collusion of the Clintons, Clinton campaign, DNC, and establishment elites, including "mainstream media." Had Clinton won the campaign, as the media and elites expected, we would be not be hearing about "Russian hacking."

A reset in the U.S.-Russia relationship could be a "win-win" for everyone, including Europe. Putin and Russia appear to be willing, and Trump and his nominee for Secretary of State, Rex Tillerson, are not "carrying the baggage" of Obama and Hillary Clinton, nor beholden to the "inside the beltway" Cold War anti-Russia establishment. #DrainTheSwamp. Fed Interest Rate Hike Bad News For China? At the Federal Reserve Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting on Wednesday, an interest rate hike of 0.25% is expected. This rate hike will be only the second increase by the Federal Reserve in 10 years (the first increase took place December 2015). This may have ramifications on emerging markets in general and China in particular which faces an economic slowdown. A U.S. interest rate increase will likely increase capital outflows and generate additional growth headwinds for China.

Headlines Tuesday leading up to the expected Fed Rate Hike:

Dow Heads for 20,000 as Stocks Rise, Gold Falls"Global stocks advanced, sending the Dow Jones Industrial Average within 50 points of 20,000 on speculation that the Federal Reserve’s expected rate increase is a signal of confidence that the economy is strengthening. The dollar and Treasuries were little changed. IBM Corp. and Intel Corp. led gains in the blue-chip index as it heads for a fresh record and the round-number milestone ... Its relative-strength index stood at the highest level in two decades ..."--Bloomberg.com

IBM Lays Out Plans to Hire 25,000 in U.S. Ahead of Trump Meeting"IBM Chief Executive Officer Ginni Rometty said she plans to hire about 25,000 people in the U.S. and invest $1 billion over the next four years, laying out her vision for filling technology jobs in America on the eve of a meeting of industry leaders with President-elect Donald Trump. Rometty, who is on Trump’s advisory panel of business leaders, will join Facebook Inc.’s Sheryl Sandberg, Amazon.com Inc.’s Jeff Bezos and Alphabet Inc.’s Larry Page and Eric Schmidt at a summit with Trump Wednesday in New York that is said to focus on jobs."--Bloomberg.com

Small Business Owners' Optimism Skyrockets Following Trump Victory"The November reading of the National Federation of Independent Businesses' small business optimism index jumped to 98.4 from 94.9 — its sharpest surge since 2009 — with all of the increase in sentiment coming after the U.S. elections held on Nov. 8."--Bloomberg.com

After talking with Trump, Bill Gates likens president-elect to JFK"... in the same way President Kennedy talked about the space mission and got the country behind that, I think whether it's education or stopping epidemics ... [or] in this energy space, there can be a very upbeat message that [Trump's] administration [is] going to organize things, get rid of regulatory barriers, and have American leadership through innovation ... Of course, my whole career has been along those lines. And he was interested in listening to that. And I'm sure there will be further conversation."--Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates after recently speaking with Trump--CNBC.com.

"Allegations of Hacking Election Are Baseless" Say High-Level American Intelligence Officials: "The various ways in which usually anonymous spokespeople for U.S. intelligence agencies are equivocating – saying things like “our best guess” or “our opinion” or “our estimate” etc. – shows that the emails alleged to have been “hacked” cannot be traced across the network. Given NSA’s extensive trace capability, we conclude that DNC and HRC servers alleged to have been hacked were, in fact, not hacked."--WashingtonsBlog.com

Obama Says No Evidence that Russia Tampered with Votes in Election: During an interview with the Daily Show’s Trevor Noah, Obama downplayed the hack of a private email account of Clinton campaign chief John Podesta. "We were frankly more concerned in the run up to the election to the possibilities of vote tampering, which we did not see evidence of, and we’re confident that we can guard against ... None of this should be a big surprise,” Obama said, “Russia trying to influence our elections dates back to the Soviet Union.” Obama dismissed the hack and the leaked emails as “not very interesting” and lacking “explosive” revelations. He puzzled as to why it was an “obsession” by the news media despite the knowledge that the Russians were responsible.--Breitbart.com.

Trump's selection of  Tillerson lifts hope of US rapprochement in Moscow"Sergei Karaganov, one of Russia's most senior foreign policy hands, says the difference is that Tillerson is a hard-nosed pragmatist who [as Secretary of State] will focus on getting things done, and leave aside the many political and philosophical issues where Russia and the US will never agree. Like many in Moscow's upper circles, Mr. Karaganov has met Tillerson and says that his ratification would be a signal that genuine and lasting detente between the two powers is a real possibility."--CSMonitor.com

The “Risk On, Risk Off” markets of 2010–2015, responded to macro news, everything depended on market perception of central bank interest rate policy. Since the election of Donald Trump, investors have been identifying new macro trends (e.g., higher interest rates) and unlock potential winners--financials, industrials, materials, healthcare--and sell losers (tech, utilities). Correlation data, post-election, indicates this time is different from any point since the Financial Crisis. Get Ready for Dow 20,000 | Barrons.com: "... the Dow is outpacing both the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq. Fed expected to raise rates

Video above published Dec 9, 2016, by FT.com: Sam Fleming talks to Donald Kohn and Joseph Gagnon about the prospect of higher interest rates and Donald Trump's proposed tax cuts. The Fed Open Market Committee (FOMC) meets December 13-14.

Why the Fed will no longer be the big deal when it meets this week: The Federal Reserve Open Market Committee on Wednesday (Dec. 14) is expected to announce an interest rate hike — its second in a year, and also the second in 10 years. However, a 25 basis point increase in the Fed funds target rate has become anticlimactic because there's a new game in town for investors the Trump Effect:
"The surprise of the Republican sweep of Congress along with the Trump administration has really changed consensus expectations almost 180 degrees. We really are focusing in on some of the impacts that some of the policy changes could have. We may be shaking up the economic world in terms of what we've been waiting for, what the Fed has even been saying — we need Congress and fiscal policy to do some of the heavy lifting here. I guess in some cases the Fed isn't really leading the story as much as they had in the past, and in some ways the Fed is really following the market right now in terms of raising rates," said Scott Anderson, Chief Economist for Bank of the West.--CNBC.com
Why Trump's Fiscal Plans Won't Blow Up the Budget: Factor in the extent to which animal spirits will be unleashed--analysts cite a Trump proposal that could turbocharge corporate spending--Trump's business plan allows manufacturing companies to immediately expense their capital investments, while the deductibility of interest expenses on future loans would be eliminated, significantly increasing the net present value of a given investment project, and encouraging companies to ramp up spending.--Bloomberg.com.

    China forex reserves drop $70bn

Video above published Dec 8, 2016, by FT.com: China’s foreign exchange reserves fell nearly $70bn last month as the country’s central bank burnt through more of its war chest in its battle to defend the renminbi from greater depreciation on the back of accelerating capital outflows.

    •  Watch the yuan: The attitude of emerging-market policy makers to greater financial liberalization will be key in driving the next stage of global entanglement. China is, therefore, the elephant in the room. Beijing wishes to promote the global use of the yuan for trade and financial transactions, and permit two-way capital flows. But it faces a challenging balancing act, amid capital outflows and yuan-depreciation expectations. Outflows since the summer have ticked up since this year's low of $37.5 billion in February, rising to $69 billion in October, slightly up from $67 billion in September, according to Bloomberg Intelligence.--Bloomberg.com

Did ICANN Just Break the Internet? No, But It Could Have, and May Yet

ICANN.org"ICANN's mission is to help ensure a stable, secure and unified global Internet. To reach another person on the Internet, you have to type an address into your computer - a name or a number. That address has to be unique so computers know where to find each other. ICANN helps coordinate and support these unique identifiers across the world. ICANN was formed in 1998 as a not-for-profit public-benefit corporation and a community with participants from all over the world. ICANN and its community help keep the Internet secure, stable and interoperable. It also promotes competition and develops policy for the top-level of the Internet's naming system and facilitates the use of other unique Internet identifiers."
If you live in the U.S., you may have noticed or been affected by the internet outage on Friday caused by a distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack:
    • Fusion.net: WTF is happening to the internet today? Internet down after DDOS attack.
    • Bloomberg.com: Possible Vendetta Behind the East Coast Web Slowdown"Millions of internet users temporarily lost access to some of the world’s most popular websites Friday, as hackers hammered servers along the U.S. East Coast with phony traffic until they crashed, then moved westward. In what is believed to be a coordinated attack on one particular Domain Name Server provider, the hack took down sites including Twitter, Spotify, Reddit, CNN, Etsy and The New York Times for long stretches of time, from New York to Los Angeles ..."
Coincidentally (or maybe not), this attack came only a day after ICANN, global coordinator of the DNS including the internet Root Zone file (via subsidiary PTI), announced that pursuant to the Obama administration's IANA Stewardship Transition, "Verisign [NASDAQ: VRSN] will now perform the root zone maintainer services for ICANN under the Root Zone Maintainer Service Agreement (RZMA). ICANN and Verisign are in the process of switching to the root zone management systems that do not include NTIA’s [U.S. government] authorization role."

Unfortunately for internet users around the world, incompetent ICANN has for several years been so obsessed with its new gTLDs program, seeing itself as a 'marketing agency' for new generic top-level domains from .PORN to .SUCKS, to now "over 1000 new gTLDs," that it has been lax in its primary duty of ensuring the security and stability of the domain name system (DNS). See, for example, on DomainMondo.com:

In the most recent Verisign 10-Q filing with the SEC (Q2 2016), Verisign warns (as it has for several years) under "Risk Factors":
"Under its New gTLD Program, ICANN has recommended delegations into the root zone of a large number of new gTLDs. In view of our role as the Root Zone Maintainer, and as a root server operator, we face increased risks should ICANN’s delegation of these new gTLDs, which represent unprecedented changes to the root zone in volume and frequency, cause security and stability problems within the DNS and/or for parties who rely on the DNS. Such risks include potential instability of the DNS including potential fragmentation of the DNS should ICANN’s delegations create sufficient instability, and potential claims based on our role in the root zone provisioning and delegation process. These risks, alone or in the aggregate, have the potential to cause serious harm to our Registry Services business. Further, our business could also be harmed through security, stability and resiliency degradation if the delegation of new gTLDs into the root zone causes problems to certain components of the DNS ecosystem or other aspects of the global DNS, or other relying parties are negatively impacted as a result of domain name collisions or other new gTLD security issues, such as exposure or other leakage of private or sensitive information."
For a reference to many of the risk factors about which ICANN has been warned, repeatedly, read the attachment included with this letter (pdf), from ICANN Board Chairman Steve Crocker to Patrik Fältström, Chair, ICANN Security and Stability Advisory Committee (SSAC), embedded below (highlighting added):
